A <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2020-30 <br />INTRODUCED BY: Mayor Bodnar and Council as a Whole <br />AN EMERGENCY RESOLUTION CONDEMNING THE RACIST AND INHUMANE <br />ACTIONS OF THE MINNEAPOLIS POLICE DEPARTMENT AND SUPPORTING <br />FAIR, JUST AND EQUITABLE PRACTICES TO <br />PROTECT THE CIVIL RIGHTS OF ALL CITIZENS <br />WHEREAS, the death of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, while in the custody of the <br />Minneapolis Police Department, has brought to light the racist, unconscionable and egregious <br />misconduct of its members and has challenged every community to assess its policies and police <br />officer training in order to assure the equal protection of all of its citizens; and <br />WHEREAS, Mayfield Village recognizes that bias -free policies in all aspects of local <br />government, and particularly within the Mayfield Village Police Department, are essential to <br />maintaining the dignity of all citizens as well as public trust and confidence in our actions; and <br />WHEREAS, Mayfield Village and all members of the Mayfield Village Police <br />Department actively strive to ensure that members of our Police Department are properly trained <br />in appropriate response to resistance and avoiding racial profiling and implicit bias; and <br />WHEREAS, the Mayfield Village Police Department has implemented clear policies <br />regarding bias -free policing and the use of body -worn cameras as well as a transparent citizen <br />complaint process. These efforts have thus far proven to be effective measures of ensuring that <br />mistreatment of citizens does not occur; and <br />WHEREAS, it is vitally important that the Mayfield Village Police Department continue <br />to prioritize and enhance such training to safeguard against potential abuses. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL OF <br />MAYFIELD VILLAGE, OHIO, THAT: <br />SECTION 1. The Mayor and Council of Mayfield Village hereby condemn the actions <br />that lead to the death of George Floyd, and support the efforts of citizens and activist groups to <br />peacefully protest. <br />SECTION 2. The Mayor and Council of Mayfield Village do hereby commit that our <br />Police Department will continue its efforts to resist racism, develop and promote policies of <br />diversity and inclusion, and continue to follow best practices to eliminate racial bias in policing. <br />SECTION 3. The Mayor and Council of Mayfield Village do hereby commit to continue <br />to provide the resources necessary to actively and properly train police personnel for the safety <br />it and protection of all. <br />
