a stronger statement, but agreed that this would be a tremendous improvement.
Mr. Papandreas explained that there is no ma jor tenant there and there will
not be the money to do this. It was clarified that some of the coltmms will be
removed, the existing wood clad columns will have the wood removed and will be
painted, and the columns in the feature areas will be clad in brick. Mr.
Gallagher pointed out that the Children's Palace area should be changed, but
understood that this would probably be impossible since this is their image.
B. Gallagher moved to approve the Great Northern Shopping Center, Plaza North,
renovations to canopy as submitted, seconded by B. Zergott, and imanimously
approved.
2) Great Northern Mall, Brookpark Road and Great Northern Blvd.
Renovation to mall entries 1, 2, and 3.
Referred by Planning Conunission February 12, 1991.
Mr. Papandreas presented color elevations explaining that the architect, J. P.
Ryan, could not be present. These revisions are being done in conjunction
with the total renovation of the comon areas inside the mall. The present
dark, cumbersome canopies will be removed and replaced with a series of
mankato stone porticos ranging in size, the smaller at first stepping up to
the largest at the entry doors. The soft arched theme and the skylights on the
entries are to be used throughout the interior to achieve a lighter more open
atmosphere. The floors of the entries will be Beaumionite. 0-ome of this stone
will be keyed in to the exterior brick wall to integrate the new design into
the old. The curb will be btunped out very slightly to enphasize these entries.
There wi1T be planters throughout with ornamental lattice work. Because of the
difference in entries, each will be of a slightly different design, but the
same theme will be carried out in all three. He explained that the entry to
the food court will be open to the second floor. All the existing stone
service screens will be reclad with matching brick in an attempt to make them
less noticeable. The existing outdoor eating areas will remain. The rendering
shows a tall shrub, which would appear to be arborvitae in the planters, but
it is not designated. Mr. Zergott suggested that they use Carpi.nus European
Hornbean instead of the arborvitae explaining that the arborvitae do not grow
well in a mall situation, and would never reach the height showno However
since the Carpinus is not an evergreen, he suggested that they bring in some
lower level evergreen material as well. Mr. Papandreas offered to submit a
specific landscaping plan showing the new material. Nir. Sohn believed that
the entrances were somewhat weak aiid would like something stronger; however,
he agreed that this design would open up the area. B. Zergott moved to
approved the Great Northern Mall proposal to renovate mall entries 1, 2, and 3
but we would appreciate seeing further development on the landscaping,
seconded by Y. Sohn, and tmanimously approved.
II. REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF MINUTES (Heard at this point):
B. Zergott moved to accept the minutes of January 16, 199.1 as presented,.
seconded by M. Case, and unanimously approved.
VI. ADJOURNNIIINT :
2
The meeting was adjourned at 6:35 p.m.
