.1
further west thau the old one. He further stated that this station would contain the larger
equipment and the offices. Mayor Boyle explained that the existing station would be sold, and that
fire station number 2 is being looked at presently and it has not been decided if it would be re-
built or renovated. There has always been two stations, but at one time there was some talk about
consolidating both stations iu the bus garage, however this was never viable. Chief Osterhous
explained that the first fire station was located in what later became the old police station. In
response to Mrs. O'Rourke's question, he explained that North Olmsted did service I-480 in
Fauview aud also to the county line, but there were reciprocal agreements with surrou.nding
communities. Mrs. Koehler, an adjacent neighbor, spoke for'?' the other neighbors, Mrs.
Christianakis and Mrs. Hutynak, all of whom were concerned about keeping as many trees as
possible. They would like to meet with the forester and have liim tag the trees which can be
preserved. They are mainly concerned about saving the large trees in the tree line behind their
homes, and noted that the developers are planning on installing small trees. Mr. Gorris advised
that the forester has been given the plaus and would be working with the developer. He suggested
that the forester contact them when he is going to be on the site. She stated that they have been
told that there would be a 6 foot board on board fence between the properties. She was also
concerned about safety of children during construction aud thought that a snow fence might help.
Mr. Bohlmann stated that they would make appropriate arrangements for the safety of the
children during the pre-construction meeting, a snow fence might be a good idea, or perhaps
something a bit more sturdy. He also advised that he had talked to Dave Wendell, the forester,
and they would make a concerted effort to save all the trees possible. Both a 6 and 8 foot board
on board fence had been mentioned, but the A.R.B. had preferred the 6 foot so the neighbors
could see some of the landscaping. He stated that the neighbors could decide that later. It was
clarified that the only recycling done on the site was for aluminum cans, it was not a recycling
center. Chief Osterhouse stated that usually there are only two or three cars a day coming onto
the site. The neighbors agreed that a fire station would be a good neighbor, but they did want to
be contaoted about the trees. Mr. Boblmann stited that if any adjustments had to be made to the
landscaping after the building is completed, they would attempt to consider the concems of the
neighbors. Mr. Deichmann advised that the lot is entirely zoned General Retail. Mr. Miller asked
if the fire department could bring back the bird feeder that is now on the property. The chief
agreed that this could be done. Ms. Dickson explained the light on the site will be kept to a
miuimum, all light fixtures labeled SA and SB will be on 16 foot, 6 inch poles, the 2 SC fixtures
will be on 27 foot poles which will be directed down onto the apron, and all fixttues will have
sluelds on the sides to keep light from spreading onto the neighbors' property. Mr. Tallon asked
what the lumens would be on the lot lines, aud advised that 0 to .5 foot candles would be
preferred and this can always be done with shielding. 1VIs. Dickson stated that all the fixtures
would have shields on the house side and that at the walk area they have low level, ballard lights.
The 911 pole shown on the plan in front of the station is an emergency telephone to be used in the
event that someone comes, to the station for help when the fireman are out on a call. Since the.
station is set back almost 200 feet from Lorain Road and there is quite a bit of landscaping, Mr.
Orlowski is concerned about people on the sidewalk seeing the trucks leaving station, and
suggested that some kind of traffic activated signalization be installed. Chief Osterhouse advised
that usually the trucks stop and look before entering the sidewalk area, and thought perhaps the
landscaping could be cut back. Mr. Dickson stated that that the landscaping in that area has been
restricted for visibility. Since this is a city development, and the council is familiar with the plans,
Mr. Bohlmaun was not.sure the B.Z.D. Committee would want to hear it, this would be up to
them. B. Gorris moved to approve the plans for the new fire station number 1 at 24291 Lorain
9
