1. A variance for an additional wall sign, code allows 1, applicant shows 2, section
1163.28(a), which failed 0-5.
2. A 1 foot variance for the height of the wall sign code permits 4ft, applicant shows Sft,
section 1163.28(c), which passed 5-0.
3. A 23inch variance for sign projecting from mounting surface, code allows 14 inches,
applicant show 37 inches,1163.28(b), which failed 0-5.
Speedwav; 24046 :Lorain Road
Proposal consists of a ground sign and the following variance is requested:
A 3 foot setback variance for ground sign located within the right of way, code requires a minunum
distance of 5 ft, applicant show 2 ft, section 1163.27(b).
Jim Bond of National Illumination & Sign was administered the oath. Mr. Bond said while
installing the ground sign water retention pipes were found within the lawn area. Due to weight
limitations their engineering department changed the brick sign base to a lighter material and
created a new footer system that meets code and can support the ground sign. However,
placement can no longer meet the required five foot setback due to the retention pipes. Mr.
McReynolds said the applicant's intent was to replace an existing nonconforming pole sign with
a new conforming monument sign. They have worked with the city engineer who determined
the storm water lines could not sustain the monument's weight. The applicant has worked with
the city to create a sign which will not jeopardize the retention system and meets structural codes
therefore he has no objections to the request. Mr. Raig said the existing nonconforming sign
impeded the required setback more than the proposed monument sign which won't obstruct the
line of sight therefore he had no objections. Mr. Bond said the sign would be in 2 feet from the
sidewalk. Members had no objections as the applicant removed a nonconforming pole sign and
redesigned the monument sign to ensure the retention system was not compromised.
Ms. Bellido moved, seconded by Ms. Diver, to grant Speedway of 24046 Lorain Road a 3
foot setback variance for ground sign located within the right of way, code requires a
minimum distance of 5 ft, applicant show 2 ft, section 1163.27(b) which passed 5-0.
ADJOURNMENT
With no further business the meeting adjourned at 7:35 p.m.
la,
J fer Ru o ph, Chair
y I I Ja
?
Approved:
?r ~
onna Rote, Clerk of Commissions
