used for climate-controlled storage. The addition will house offices and clerk windows. The
addition will consist of a red brick base to match the existing Hall and taupe-colored vinyl
siding, with a glass entrance vestibule. An asphalt roof is proposed. The Commission will need
to approve the proposed design, a budget will need be finalized and more refinements will need
to be made to the proposed interior layout.
Mr. Picard stated that the goal of the project was not to draw attention to the addition, so it will
be lower than the original building. A glass walkway will connect the two portions of the
building that will be lit at night so people can attend court. The historic building will be tuclc-
pointed and the front and side steps will be removed along with the other parts that are not
original to the building. The building is four feet above grade but will be fully accessible. The
stage will be rebuilt and the interior and exterior lighting will be redone with more historically
accurate lighting. Mr. Limpert asked why the addition would come out towards the road. Mr.
Picard stated that the addition needs to have as much interior seating as possible without losing
the land space available. Mr. Dubelko asked what the front door would look like. Mr. Picard
stated that the door and windows would be replaced with a more historically accurate design,
including glass and wood stain color. Mr. Dubowski asked about the security of the front door.
Mr. Picard stated that on a daily basis, the door would be for egress only, but during functions it
would be able to be used for ingress and egress. The limestone planks from the front steps will
be used in the new steps but the brick wing walls will be removed. The old wrought iron railings
are buried in the walls and will be used in the renovations.
Ms. Schuler moved, seconded by Mr. Dubowski, to approve the Certificate of
Appropriateness for 17-9810; Old Town Hall; 5186 Dover Center Road for an addition and
alterations, motion passed 6-0.
COMMUNICATIONS
Records Committee
Mr. Dubelko suggested giving the entire set of files to the Olmsted Historical Society. Mr.
Limpert added that Ms. Van Auken was married to the school superintendent and was involved
in numerous community groups, including the League of Women Voters and the Landmarks
Commission. The files may be valuable in future research.
Mr. Limpert moved, seconded by Ms. Schuler, to accept the files donated by the Van
Auken family and to see if the Olmsted Historical Society would like the files; if not, then
the Landmarks Commission will keep them in their files, motion passed 6-0.
Historic Preservation Plan Committee
Ms. Schuler pointed out that the discussion about funding can be removed. Mr. Dubellco
suggested that the Commission look beyond the historic district since he was able to find so
much history on Clague Road during his Centennial Home research. Ms. Schuler suggested
working on educating the historic district residents about what it means to live in the district. Mr.
Dubelko agreed and added that historical areas can foster community pride and help build
neighborhoods. He suggested creating an awareness about the Clague Road area and others by
using signage, landscaping or other means. Mr. Aspery stated that Chapter 165 will be reviewed
