..,.
Commissioner's comments:
Mr. Barker said that placing the brick pavers along Lorain Road would be more cost efficient
than having landscape beds. Businesses can't properly maintain landscape beds so close to the
street, due to salt and snow plowing. The dealership could possibly save money as the beds
would not require irrigation. The cost differences between pavers and landscape beds would
be minimal to possibly being more cost efficient using brick pavers. The commission would
like to see brick pavers used in the tree lawns along Lorain and Porter Road, as well as
additional honeylocust trees. They are happy with the building addition and how the applicant
has tried to curve the corner of the addition. The commission likes the proposed screening for
the rear of the building and voiced that the applicants have done a very good job. The
commission understands the differences and circumstances of the corner and the position the
owner is being placed in. Mr. Schock believes that preserving the existing trees, using brick
pavers and matching the CVS corner would provide be a nice gateway into the Historical
District. Mr. Kula said KIA provided him with a standard building design to be used by his
and other KIA dealerships. He requested the Commission provide a letter describing Halleen
KIA's location in the Historic District and the Commission's requirements for building designs
which reflect a historic character rather than the KIA boilerplate.
Resident's comments:
Mr. Maxim stated that the view from Lorain and Porter Road would be exceptional and an
improvement to the area. He is not sure when his concerns should be addressed regarding
llours of operation, noise levels and traffic to and from the site. Mr. Lang advised the neighbor
that he would be best served voicing adverse impact concerns at Planning Commission
meetings.
T. Schock moved to grant a certificate of appropriateness to construct a briek addition to
the existing KIA showroom at Lorain and Porter road shown on subtnitted drawings.
With the further eondition that the drawings be changed to reflect red brick pavers in the
tree lawns, from the driveway of Porter Road to the southwest corner of the existing
building and to reflect 4 additional honeylocust trees to be spaced along the front of the
building as discussed ancl to move one of the existing honeylocust trees further to the
south along Porter Road. P. Schumann seconded, the motion, which, .was unanimously
approved.
Mr. Lang thanked the applicants for working with Landmarks and believes that everyone
would benefit from the additional changes. Mr. Lang asked Mr. Kula if he would allow the
Historical Society or Landmarks Commission to enter the historical sites to see if they could
acquire possible replacement materials for other historical buildings. Mr. Schumann stated that
in his role with the Historical Society he has been looking into the possibility of saving things
from the site by talking with the Building Department abQUt partial demolition permits.
V.
