7. He appreciated that the applicant added landscaping materials along the back planters as he was not
sure why they were not addressed before but liked the improvement.
8. He completely agrees with the substitutions of Norway Spruce for the Austrian Pine along the north
mounded area.
9. The applicant added 8 Aristocrat Pears and 5 Sunset Maples on the back side of the fence which he
agrees with.
10. He asked for a clarification regarding the Reingold arborvitaes on the north side where the carts are
stored. Mr. Muller said that the Reingold arborvitaes were to be planted 18 inch high and were
planted at 12 inches and they are now about 15 inches tall. He is not sure why they were required to
have the arborvitaes there as it doesn't screen the carts. It should have been changed as it won't ever
screen the carts. Mr. Malone agreed and advised that several of the Reingold Arborvitaes which
were planted are dead and needed to be replaced.
11. Wrapping around the east side of the mound there was to be Austrian Pine. Norway Spruces were
used to substitute all of them. Mr. Muller suggested that there was both Norway Spruce and White
Spruce planted. Mr. Malone agreed with the change.
12. The European Beach along the south west corner which was replaced with a Red Sunset he
disagrees with. The tree is a stately tree which is a focal point was probably placed in the location to
be a focal point.
13. Emerald Mound Honeysuckle along the south west corner was replaced with Gold Mound Spiraea
he does not agree with the change as the area is the first bed seen and works as an accent which is
lost in the replacement.
14. The Aristocrat Pears used throughout the site he feels is an adequate substitution.
15. The Red Sunset Maple replacing the Green Vase Zelkova he does not agree with for same focal
point reasons as the rest of the south west corner
16. The 4 missing Crabapples should be replaced. There were 2 missing in the section directly south of
building A and 2 missing south of the parking lot between buildings A& B.
17. The applicants added bed areas in the sidewalks which run from Target to Brookpark Road and he
appreciates that being added.
18. The biggest objection over the changes is the substitutions of Northern Bayberry for the Saybrook
Gold Juniper and the Taxus media along the front of the buildings. The Taxus were used in the
original design for their nice, compact, tight, formal look and the bayberry's grow up to 6 to 8 feet
becoming a maintenance issue and they wont be kept up to the point of having the same affect as the
Taxus media will give. He strongly disagrees with the change.
Mr. Muller suggested that the taxus would burn out from the salt used along the sidewalks. Mr. Malone
suggested using magnesium or calcium in lieu of salt along the sidewalks to preserve plants. Mr. Muller
said that there was no sidewalk or buffer to the area in question if there was the plants could survive.
Mr. Malone stood by his preference due to the design layout. Mr. Muller advised that a lot of the trees
were replaced due to not withstanding salt. Mr. Malone felt that the argument of salt was not founded as
the locations of the plants would not be exposed to heavy amounts of salts given the buffering and the
slow traffic speed throughout the site.
Mr. Muller said they would be willing to resolve the recommendations add plants, but they shouldn't
have to remove what is already in place. He felt the plantings are doing well. In addition to what has
been discussed there have been flowering mums, sedum and grasses along the front to add color as well
as along the islands. The owners have added 6% to 8% inore then what was called for on the original
plans. They would rather add additional plants then remove trees which have been planted. Mr. Malone
voiced that most of the changes that were made were practical and made good since given most of the
reasons for the changes. The material selection for the most part is better then what was originally
approved.
5
