. • • 6
/ the word Honda from the second wall sign, and having a 12 foot high ground sign with the
certified used car ground sip moved. Mr. Burke asked why two ground signs were needed. Mr.
Hazelton advised that each business needed its own identity.
Mr. O'Malley voiced that he was offended by the applicant's method of poling the board and
?.... insinuating that the board needed to work with them. The board has worked with applicants in an
effort to assist owners in enhancing or upgrading their entire site including signage not just
changing out signs and calling it an enhancement. Mr. Burke voiced that he objected to the height
variance being requested for the ground sign. Mrs. Sergi questioned if the banners would remain
in the building windows and vehicles. Mr. Bizjak advised that his client wanted to withdraw the
request for 9 foot 7 inch height variance for ground sign (C). His client would also like to
withdraw the 15 foot variance for ground sign distances. If they are granted a second ground sign
(D) they would be placed a minimum of 200 feet apart. The wall signs would be Honda sign (B) at
the southeast end and Ganley sign (A) at the southwest end of the building and both will be blue.
Mr. Hazelton stated that the second ground sign is for used cars only. Mr. O'Malley cautioned the
board that once signs are granted the verbiage of the signs are at the discretion of the owners.
Board members did not feel a second ground sign was warranted as the applicants had been doing
business without a second ground sign for years and the used cars were identifiable as they are.
The character of the area would not be altered, nor would government services. However the
property can and has yielded a reasonable return without variances and the spirit and intent of the
code may not be followed granting the variances.
N. Sergi moved to grant Ganley Honda of 25870 I,orain Road their request which consists of
new signage and the following variance is granteci as amended: A variance for 1 additional
wall sign on a builcling (signs A& B), (code permits 1, applicant shows 2) section 1163.27(A).
Conditioned on the removing the duplication of the use of I3onda and as shown on the sign
? plan being placed on the southwest corner and south east corner of the building. Which is in
violation of Ord. 90-125 section 1163.27(A). J. Burke seconded the motion, which was
unanimously approved. Variance Granted
N. Sergi moved to grant Ganley Honda of 25870 I,orain Road their request which consists of
new signage and the following variance is granted: A variance for 1 additional ground sagn
on a lot (Signs C& D), (code allows 1, applicant shows 2) section 1163.27(a). COMMU1vICATIONS:
Mr. Burke asked board members what timeframes they had available for a special meeting in
April. Mr. Kalina suggested that if the Lazy Boy signs were not in place prior to their grand
opening they could wallc out on the deal so he had to have a special meeting. Mr. O'Malley
advised that the matter of leasing and the business of the owner is not the burden of the board. The
clerlc reviewed dates council chambers were not available due to prescheduled meetings. Board
members advised that they would review their schedules for the week of April 16, 2007.
