City of North Olmsted Landmarks Commission <br />Annual Report 2008 <br />INTRODUCTION <br />The mission of the Landmarks Commission is to protect, preserve and perpetuate the structures <br />and districts which reflect the City's heritage. The Commission encourages education and <br />creates an environment that promotes the community's historic sites, events and citizens in order <br />to foster civic pride. <br />LANDMARKS COMMISSION MEMBERS <br />Paul Schumann, Chairman John J. Lasko, Jr. <br />Thomas Schock, Vice Chairman Lawrence Orlowski <br />Maryellen Davis Donald Rerko <br />Thomas Dubowski Dale Thomas <br />Jeffrey Herwick <br />CERTIFICATES OF APPROPRIATENESS <br />Any homeowner in the Historic Certificates of Appropriateness 2000-2008 <br />District who wishes to make an 18 <br />alteration or addition to their 16 <br />property must apply to the 14 <br />Landmarks Commission for a 12 <br />Certificate of Appropriateness. <br />The number of requests for <br />Certificates of Appropriateness in <br />2008 was similar to previous <br />years. Due to a higher level of <br />organization and clearer <br />parameters within the Landmarks 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 Zoos 2007 2008 <br />Commission, homeowners" NorthOlmstedlandmarksCommission <br />applications were handled more <br />skillfully. The Commission's membership, combined experience, and better application of the <br />federal guidelines are all contributing factors. <br />BIDDLiLPH TRAIL <br />The biggest challenge before the Landmarks Commission in 2007 and 2008 was a proposal for <br />the construction of Biddulph Trail, a cluster home development off Butternut Ridge Road in the <br />Historic District. After rejecting the reQuest to demolish the existing home on the site of the <br />proposed Butternut Ridge access, a subcommittee of the Landmarks Commission participated in
