Donna Rote
From:
Sent:
To:
Subject:
Hello All,
Donald Rerko
Wednesday, November 12, 2008 3:09 PM
'Donna Rote ;'John J. Lasko Jr.'; 'Melissa Meredith'; 'Malone Greg';
'Ralph Bohlmann ; 'Williamson Angela ; 'Cotner
James'
11/12/08 Planning Meeting
I am sorry but I can not make the meeting tonight.
I would however lice this statement'to be part of the meeting.
CEIVE
NOV i z zoos
PLANNING DEPARTMENT
This is in reference to Ordinance 2008-131:
An ordinance providing, for the amendment of section 1127.04 of the Zoning Code of
the City of North Olmsted to provide for voter approval by majority of electors within
the ward of any Zoning or Rezoning from Single Family to Residential Cluster District.
I, feel this Ordinance is not in the best interest of the City of North Olmsted. This would
not represent the residents well. This Ordinance would foster a decision by only the
residents that would typically be opposed to the change. (Not in my backyard).
The residents of North Olmsted elect officials to represent them AND to be strong leaders
to do what is best for the City. Sometimes doing what is'right does not always get you
votes. That is the difficulty with being a strong political leader. Residents do not understand
every issue that leads up to a final decision. They also will not have an unbiased decision if
it is perceived to have a negative affect on them. It is impossible to have the residents be
informed of each and every element for a decision due to time and cost restraints. This is
why we elect LEADERS to make responsible decisions.
We must loolc at each issue holistically on an individual basis. Officials need to bring in
experts to provide information to assist them in an informed decision. We can not rely on
rumors or perceptions to make a decision. Nor can we make a decision based on how
vocal a few people may be on an issue.
As a resident of North Olmsted and a Planning Commission member, it is my
strong opinion that this Ordinance would not be helpful to the City.
Transferring this responsibility front the City's leaders to the residents is only beneficial for
weak leaders. A leader should be able to guide the vote from other City officials based on
facts related to the issue. If they can not do this, I feel they are not well informed about the
issue.
Don Rerlco
5
