was recommended that the home be featured in the 2011 North Olmsted magazine as a feature.
The commission's efforts at landmarking the house could also be tied into the article. The
commission would like to invite the homeowner to the January meeting to present the plaque.
The commission discussed the process to designate a property as a landmark. Ms. Wenger
encouraged the commission members to start the process with a nomination. The commission
considered the Knight-Biddulph house on Porter Road, the Biddulph house on Butternut Ridge
Road, or the Seltzer house on Lorain Road. They briefly discussed the significance of the Seltzer
home and all Mayor Seltzer did for the city during the depression. The commission felt the
nominations should be prioritized.
Mr. Schumann said the Porter house was built around 1860 and there is evidence the home was a
Biddulph home. The home was most likely built by the Knight family and purchased by the
Biddulph family in the 1900's. Mr. Rerko said records were not kept prior to 1860 and if a home
date was not known they listed it as being built in 1860. The commission has documents
pertaining to the home which includes photos from 1900's and news article from 1980's when
there was a fire in the home. The home is unique as it is the only all sandstone home from the
period. Mr. Rerko said the home may have been connected to the Underground Railroad.
Mr. Schumann, Mr. Thomas and Mr. Neville will work as a committee to compile information
on the home to submit and the clerk will pull any maps or other information the city may have on
the home. Mr. Schumann will visit county archives to obtain copies of any information on the
home.
Mr. Thomas moved, seconded by Mr. Rerko, to nominate 4302 Porter Road, the Knight-
Biddulph home, to be designated as a landmark, which was approved 8-0.
Mr. Schumann said the home at 25896 Butternut Ridge Road was originally a vernacular home
but later altered to look Italianate. This property should also be landmarked. The Biddulph
family is the same family who built Springvale Ballroom and Golf Course. The exterior appears
to look as it did iri the 1870's and Frostville has information on the home which can be copied.
Mr. Richner, Mr. Thomas and Mr. Mahoney will compile the documentation on the home to be
submitted and the clerk will copy all city documentation pertaining to th'e property.
Mr. Schumann moved, seconded by Mr. Neville, to nominate 25896 Butternut Ridge Road,
the Biddulph home, to be designated as a landmark, which was approved 8-0.
Ms. Wenger said ultimately the commission's detailed report will go before Planning and Design
Commission for review then to City Council.
2
