Speaker Series Event Recap
The New Frontiers event was successful and had a good turnout. Mr. Thomas is willing to work
on a Part 2 for this fall, perhaps at the Universalist Church again. Mr. Richner said he learned
valuable history about the region from the presentation and wondered if there is a way to share
the information with a wider audience. Ms. Wenger said if Mr. Thomas is willing a voice over
could be done for the slide show. The presentation could then be featured on the cable channels.
In the past similar videos were distributed among the primary schools. Ms. Wenger recommends
the search continue for other speakers as well.
Certified Local Government Grant
Ms. Wenger reported the awards are to be announced next Monday, April 19. The decision has
been made but the news not yet released. Although she feels the application for Old Town Hall
is ideal based on the grant criteria and there is an advantage of being a new CLG community, she
is concerned about the amount of funding requested. If the committee prefers to divide the funds
amongst more communities, the request may not be successful.
Ohio Historical Markers
Mr. Thomas reported the application for a marker to be placed at Frostville Museum was
submitted in March. The decision on whether the Olmsted Historical Society will receive the
$750 grant towards the cost of the marker will be decided on April 15. Mr. Schumann said the
OHS is willing to go ahead with the purchase even if the grant is not awarded.
Ms. Wenger reported the marker for the Unitarian Universalist Church is scheduled to be
shipped on May 14. Permission has been granted for Service Department employees to receive
the shipment and assist with installation. The City will also help publicize the ceremony, which
will be scheduled on or around Memorial Day.
Cemetery Improvement Plan
Ms. Wenger reported some of the survey work has been completed and is in the process of being
refined. In the first draft, the grave sites were not to scale. Additional information was provided
and she is becoming more comfortable with the data being returned. Even so, it is clear the
internal road has migrated to some degree from its original position and is now at least partially
over designated grave sites. The staking of open areas where there are missing pins has not yet
been done. She intends to assemble the Cemetery Committee again soon.
This summer the City is hiring two full time interns to assist with economic development and
projects for the mayor's office. Phil Tomko, the former Planning Department SITES student and
originator of the cemetery improvement efforts, will be one of them. It is hoped he will have
time to work on the cemetery proj ect as well.
