.
.°'
Committee meeting. Mr. Mahler requested the date of that meeting. The clerk advised Mr.
Mahler to contact the chairman of the committee concerning the next meeting date, as it has
not yet been scheduled at this time. She clarified this project would be subject to the final
approval of City Council.
VI. ADJOURNMENT:
Prior to adjournment, Mr. Papendreas requested to address the board concerning the Water
Tower Square minor change as referred on September 9, 1998 by Building Commissioner
Conway. He presented elevations and noted all the materials and accent bands will be
virtually identical to what is in the existing center. One of the canopies will be eliminated,
however the intent was to keep with the overall character of the shopping center. Mr. Yager
requested that the developer identify the entrance way location for Giant Eagle as compared
to Sportsmart. Mr. Papendreas noted that the plan is not exactly centered but the dotted line
on the plan indicates the location of Sportsmart. W. Zergott questioned the purpose for
removing the towers. Mr. Liggett agreed that would look awkward considering the towers
will still be present at the opposite end of the shopping center. Mr. Papendreas agreed to look
at continuing that same theme across the front facade. Mr. Yager noted, although he does not
normally recommend enlarging the parapit wall, in this particular instance the enlargement of
it may be important considering the distance from Lorain Road. Mr. Crook, architect, agreed
to conform to the suggestion to expand upon the parapit wall. W. Yager elaborated there are
three things to look at: 1) adding the motif; 2) Make the physical element of the entry way a
little bigger (not necessarily the sign); and 3) make the entire design fall in line with the
existing. Mr. Liggett added the color scheme was good, but it should be a continuous pattern.
He elaborated perhaps the logo could be done a little differently in order to tie in with the rest
of the building. The members agreed this change was minor in nature, but requested that the
concerns be addressed in a revised submission. W. Yager elaborated such a review can be
done independently by one of the architects on the board. Mr. Zergott questioned the size of
the Giant Eagle Store as the board promised some people that there would not be a super
store here. Mr. Papendreas noted media play was 49,000 and Sportmart was 41,000 square
feet. According to the code the combination of these two would not classify as a superstore.
In response to an operations question, it was clarified carts will be stored inside the building,
however there are designated spots in the parking lot where people can put the carts for later
collection. Mr. Yager requested that the blue thing that was put up for 1Vyedia Play be
removed. Mr. Papendreas indicated his intentions were to remove that element. Mr. Yager
questioned if a vote was needed considering this was a minor change. The clerk wondered if
the building department can enforce any changes without a vote. Mayor Musial noted if this
is a minor change it is within the prerogative of the chairman of the B.Z.D. committee and
encouraged the board to make an official recommendation. W. Rymarczyk added it would be
subject to the review of all three chairman.
M. Yager moved to approve the drawings for Water Tower Square as submitted with the
following comments: A) the motif of the red and green canopy elements show back up in this
design; B) that the "Criant Eagle" entry element be more in proportion with the physical
presence; C) that the video area entry be more consistent with some of the facility in terms of
3 ?
