•
. "Nb.
Arclutectural review board meeting, but if that were the case then he would be very coucerned about
that type of suggestion. Mr. Konold indicated that he agreed with the Law Director. Mr. Bayus asked
if seeiug a picture of a store that was built in December of 1997, and has the sign installed on theu store
front would help them get a better idea of what it will look like. Mr. Gomersall questioned why the
sign in the picture looked different from the layout that was submitted to the board. Mr. Conway
suggested they moved things to meet our criteria. Mr. Kremzar asked if the logo in the picture was
going to be Jo Ann's trademark. The board members iudicated that they liked tlie look of the sign in
the picture better then what was submitted to them. Mr. Conway suggested if that is the directiou of
the board theu the applicant may go back to the original as the inteut was to follow the suggestions of
the Arclutectural review board. The board members would like to see the original Jo Ann Fabric sign
package that was submitted be used. No further question were asked.
T..Maloney moved to graut Jo Ann Fabrics; 26337 Great Northern Shopping Ceuter, their request for
variance (1123.12). 1). A 2 foot 11 iuch variance for height of sigu. Proposed sign will be 6' feet
11" inches iu height and code permits only 4' feet. A Violatiou of Ord. 90-125, Sectiou 1163.12 (a).
2). A 110' square foot variauce for over all sign. I'roposing 185' sq ft A,nd code permits only
75. Sq ft Violation of Ord. 90-125, Sectiou 1163.12 (a). In regards to Issues (3). and (4) the board
found the oiiginal colors and sign design more to their liking and once approved the law Director said
it would be a moot issue. The motiou was second by J. ICremzar, and unauimously approved.
Variance Grantecl. During the framing of the motiou it was noted that the variance request may
chauge due to the fact the added verbiage would be placed undemeath the Jo Auu Fabric sigu. The
building commissioner agreed to provide the clerk with the corrected variance request, and the
motiou was corrected accordiugly.
12. Star Bauk; 4700 Great Northern Blvd.:
Request for variance (1123.12). Request a variance of 32. Sq ft For total sign face area, for a business
building. They are proposing 279. Sq ft code permits only 265. Sq ft Violation of Ord. 90-125,
Section 1163.11 (c). Note: Board of zoning appeals granted a bu.ilding sign variances on 28 Feb.,
1996, and 7 May, 1998.
Chaumau Gomersall called all interested parties before the board. The oath was admiuistered to Mr.
Doerr, with Ellet sign company. Mr. Gomersall reviewed the variances being requested and asked Mr.
Doerr if tlus is the saine building that Criant Eagle is moving into, and will they be the main tenants. Mr.
Doerr indicated Mr. Gomersall's statement was correct. Mr. Gomersall suggested if we grant you a
sign that is over code then it will make your sing bigger then their sign. It is like putting the cart before
the horse. Giant Eagle should submit their package first to have their sign size established as they are
the main tenants. That is why the current sign is the size it is now. Rini Rego didn't want to give up
any more square footage then what they did. It really makes it almost impossible to make a ruling on
tlus before we know what Criant Eagles intentions are. Mr. Doerr suggested he could only address
what he has heard in tlie media as they did not do Rini Rego nor are they doing any signs for C'riant
Eagle. What we have heard is that they are going to keep the Rini Rego name and only change the logo
in the middle of their signage. Mr. Konold suggested that Mr. Doerr was conect as he was familiar
with the case, but indicated that the final decision would not be made until the 16 Th. of the month.
Mr. Gomersall indicated he strongly felt that the board could not make a ruling on the sign without
making it contingent upon Giant Eagle. Mr. Koberna asked if Star Bank was in the building now or
what was the date they would be in the building. Mr. Doerr suggested they hope to open on October
the 9th. VVe have a letter from Giant Eagle pertaining to the sign we are requesting, if you would like
to read it. It covers their feelings regarding the sign Star Bank is proposing. Mr. Gomersall indicated
8
