f
?
v
in writing that the paint was to be removed form the brick wall. Mi-. Conway reviewed for the board
members that the applicants painted a portion of the rear wall behind the sign, the area painted has no
architectural statement, or relationship to the structure nor had it been approved by the Planning
Commission or the Architectural Review Board. Therefore, the building department views the entire
box as the applicant's signage, not just the lettering. Mr. Maloney questioned if the applicant was
including the painted area as the sign. Mr. Frye indicated that the painted area was not a part of the
sign. There was discussion whether or not the rear of the building was a painted brick or not and
whether or not the applicant wanted the painted area to remain. Mr. Conway was reasonably sure
that the brick color was integral and not painted. It was further discussed that the dimensions of the
sign would be altered if the mocha backdrop was removed. Mr. Maloney indicated that the board
wanted the mocha backdrop removed. The applicants were granted variances based on wrong square
footage at the last meeting and now they have exceeded the variances that were granted to them last
month. Mr. Frye indicated that Home Place was allowed a sign that was bigger then what they are
requesting. 1VIr. Conway commented that there was a difference between Home Place and Bed Bath
and Beyond, Home Place used the entire building which is a larger square footage and they were
granted a variance for their sign. Mr. Frye indicated that he would have to talk with his headquarters
and return. Mr. 1Vlaloney indicated that the board could table the proposal until next month when the
applicant was ready. Mr. Kremzar questioned if there was going to be any other signage for the
building on the site. Mr. Conway advised that the Board of Zoning Appeals had granted variances
years ago for the outer parcel signs. Mr. Conway felt that the pylon signs should be addressed as a
separate issue. Mr. Ogrinc questioned if Bed Bath and Beyond would submit the pylon signs for
approval. Mr. Conway indicated that as Bed Bath and Beyond does not own the outer parcels
Developer Diversified would need to submit the signage as it is their property. Mr. Conway
cominented that he would like to see the Board of Zoning Appeals board suggest to Council that the
City come up with some type of moratorium or put some type of package for the entire site together
to address their signage as it is unlike any other entity. He would like to see the mall and strip center
have a section under the zoning code regarding their signs. Mr. Gareau indicated that the Board of
Zoning Appeals would not be the ones to accomplish that as that would have to be addressed by
Council. Mr. Conway suggested that he would like to see Board of Zoning Appeals suggest
something of that nature to Council so they would address the sites sign issues.
J. Maloney indicated that Bed, Bath, and Beyond of 25975 Great Northern Plaza would be tabled
until the November l, 2001 meeting. Tabiecl 10-4-01
IV. NEW BUSINESS:
V.
