.
Which is in violation of Ord. 90-125 sections (1163.27 (c)) and (1163.24 (c)).
Vice Chairman Kremzar called all interested parties forward to review the request. Jerry Archer, of
Archer Signs, came forward to be sworn in and explain the proposal. He indicated they are actually
reducing the square footage of the signage but they are beyond the code. He referred to the plans. He
said Toys R Us is doing away with the Geoffrey the Giraffe logo nationally. They would like to
remove Geoffrey and put a star around the letter "R." They will put up a new "R" but it will have the
star around it and it is the same size. There are two signs existing where they will leave the side
cabinet but they will remove the side faces and use the new logo. Mrs. Sergi asked what the current
square footage is. Mr. Conway said the existing wall sign is 235 square feet. He pointed out it is
going up to 295,1. Mr. Conway said Geoffrey was not a part of the Toys R Us sign. It was a separate
and independent wall sign. Mrs. Sergi asked if the letters will be larger than what is on there now. Mr.
Archer said they would like to leave the letters and just change the "R." Mr. Conway said they are
losing Geoffrey and putting a star around the "R" and when they measure a rectangle, that made the
whole sign bigger even though it is just the "R." Mr. Archer said they are adding 4 ft. times 47 ft. that
actually does not exist.
N. Sergi made a motion to grant Toys R Us, 27048 Lorain Road, the request for variance (1123.12),
which consists of changing signs to include new corporate logo, and that the following variances be
granted:
l. A 195.1 square foot variance for a wall sign larger than code permits (code permits 100 square ft.,
applicant shows 295:1 square ft.), section (1163.27 (c)).
2. A 99.1 square foot variance for a wall sign larger than building frontage permits (code permits 196
square ft., applicant shows 295.1 square ft.), section (1163.24 (c)).
3. A 5 foot, 2 3/4 inch variance for a wall sign larger than 4 ft. in height (code permits 4 ft., applicant
shows 9 ft., 2 3/4 inches), section (1163.27 (c)).
Note: Geoffrey logo is to be removed and discarded. Existing wall sign is now 235 square feet. Only
the star behind the "R" is to be added making new sign 295.1 square per D.L:C.
Which is in violation of Ord. 90-125 sections (1163.27 (c)) and (1163.24 (c)).
The motion was seconded by W. Kremzar. Roll call on the motion: N. Sergi, yes; W. Kremzar, and T.
Kelly, no. Variances Denied.
Mr. Archer asked for an explanation so he can handle any questions from the company. Mr. Kremzar
said it is too high. Mr. Archer said it is just the "R" that is high. Mr. Kelly said it is too far over the
square footage allowed. Mr. Conway asked if the board's concern was the "R." He said the letters are
basically staying the same and they have increased the size of the "R." Mrs. Sergi said the "R" is about
the same size as Geoffrey. Mr. Kremzar asked if they could reduce the size of the star. Mr. Archer
said it is all proportioned on a national logo. Mrs. Sergi asked for confirmation that Geoffrey is 9 ft. 2
3/4 inches, and the star is 9 ft. 4 inches. Mr. Archer said that was correct. He asked if the board would
be able to revote if they could change that to 9 ft. 2 inches. Mr. O'Malley pointed out that the applicant
is looking for the board to reconsider the proposal with different figures.
W. Kremzar motioned to open the Toys R Us matter for reconsideration. The motion was seconded by
N. Sergi and unanimously approved. Motion Carried.
Mr. Archer asked what the board would like him to do so they can find a fair solution. He pointed out
the star needs to be somewhat dominating. Mrs. Sergi said the giraffe cabinet is 7 ft. so the star is 2 ft.
4 inches bigger, wider, but it is the same height. Mr. Archer asked if they make it an 8 ft. "R" would it
be the same square footage as the giraffe. Mr. Kelly suggested 8 ft. 6 inches. There was further
discussion about figures. Mr. Kremzar said they would have to go with 8 ft. and 3/4 inches less, so the
total height would be 8 ft. 6 inches. Mr. Conway said the maximum height of the star will be 8 ft. 6
inches.
12
