.?
. Y
city more functional and attractive to residents and visitors." Mr. Garland said that is rather broad.
He ind.icated he doesn't like the way the sentence sounds. Mr. Raig said he is not happy with the term
public relations campaign. He added that people don't like the word perception. He said they want to
develop recognizable community identity. Mrs. App said each time a program is developed, or an
event i.s developed, a specially crafted public relations campaign would have to be crafted to not just
bring attention to that event but tie it into the larger community. Mrs. Kilbane said they basically
want people to understand that there is a cultural arts committee. 'They want to draw attention to the
fact that the commission exists for the people and is functional in the community. Nlrs. App said
guidel:ines would have to be developed so each time an event needs to be promoted, they will be
consisicent with each event, yet draw attention to the event as a collaborative endeavor. Mrs. Beach
said she is wondering if it is the board's function to changq the perception of North Olmsted, as being
cultural arts friendly. Mrs. App asked if that will happen through a plan of action. Mrs. Kilbane said
by doing all the other things on the list of goals and objectives, it will happen. Mr. Garland agreed
saying it will be a by-product. Mr. Raig asked if they want a public relations campaign that promotes
that. ]3e said it can be tabled for now and the group can give it some tliought. Mrs. App said she
believes the concept can be developed with some details within the plan of action. Mrs. Beach said
this wl.lole process is great because they have talked all around some of these issues. She thinks this
gives t:hem some sort of direction. Mr. Thompson joined the meeting and Mr. Raig filled him in on
what they had discussed. He showed him the list of goals and objectives. He said they eliminated
numbe:r six (VI) from the list. He added that they can really incorporate that item in the plan of
action. Mrs. Kilbane pointed out that the word "local" would be added to item number five (V) so
they w-ould include local and regional organizations. Mr. Garland made a motion the accept the goals
and objectives with the changes mentioned. Mrs. Beach seconded the motion. Unanimously
approvecl.
IV. OLD 13USINESS:
• Discuss library tour
W. Raig thanked Mrs. Beach for arranging the library tour. Mrs. Beach said there was an article in
the paper this past week about the Cleveland Heights-University Heights library that is undergoing a
huge renovation. They are working in conjunction with the Dobama Theater and they are putting up
a builcling to house both. They are taking over the old YMCA complex and then they will merge the
two bliildings and renovate the Y and create this new complex. Mr. Garland said he read another
article which mentioned some of the hassles developing with the project. There is a group of citizens
not happy with it. Mr. Raig asked where they are with development. Mr. Garland said he believes
they have an architect that is doing some drawings. Mrs. Beach said it is in the design stage. It will
be fun,3ed in large part by a 9.5 million dollar bond issue that was approved by voters last November.
Mrs. Beach asked if it is a county library. Mrs. Kilbane said she believes it is. Mrs. App said since
taking the library tour and looking at the auditorium at the middle school, it seems such a good idea
to incurporate space for perFormances, and space for art at a library. She added that you are talking
about :fiterary arts at a library, so to combine the visual arts, the performing arts seems so logical. It is
soinetliing to pursue or at least discuss. She said the current library is fine but seems too large to
accommodate a small theater for 100 people and a gallery. There is always a problem with parking.
If there with be renovations of the current middle school auditorium, that would be another great
place 1:o consider doing a series of events in the summer. Mrs. App said we have a wonderful local
theater group, which includes Mrs. Martindale, and it's imperative to work to provide a venue for
theater arts. She said that Mrs. Martindale had mentioned a while back that they need a small space.
She said a 100 seat auditorium sticks in her mind. She has attended those performances before and
100 seems about right. She has attended things at other libraries for families. They have brought in
2
