on it. Mrs. Lord said Mrs. Gotlibowski expressed interest in talking about whether there is enough
along Claa e Rd. for a district. Mrs. Lord suggested the meinbers think about that when driving along
Clague Rd. Mrs. Lord said she had several discussions with Marge Lawson regarding her requests
and she did meet with Donna Meyers at the library. Mrs. Lord said that at the last meeting it was
decided she would call the Mayor and check back with him to see how to proceed. She did do that
and received a message from Mary Creadon that she should go ahead and proceed. Mrs. Lord and
Donna Meyers had a very nice conversation about possibilities. Ms. Meyers is not in a position to
make any decisions however. She also did say she did not see the library being ready for occupancy
for quite a while. Mrs. Lord said the board was sensing they were on a fast track but Ms. Meyers was
not. Mr. Barker said the fast traclc has to do with the design more so than moving in and that is why
they came up in December and discussed maybe having a ineeting in January, at which time the Mayor
told him they could 'get a meeting with the architect. Mr. Barker said the Mayor indicated he would
arrange that because they feel this woman's input, and with being so close to the historical district, if
not in the historical district, they should have some input on design. Mrs. Lord said they've been told
now that they don't need our input, it's not an appropriate time for that. Mr. Lind said he doesn't
know what tiinetable they are on but he did stop and talk to guy who owns the old Sears catalog
house and he said they have yet to receive notice to move. They are to be given two months notice.
So any talk of an early spring ground breaking doesn't look proinising. Mrs. Davis said there are two
big houses there and they were given a year, and that was in June, early suininer. Mrs. Lord indicated
Donna Meyers said she would take the information (Mrs. Lord had given her copies of everything
Marge had shared with the board), to the Iibrary people who would be involved in making some of
those decisions. One of the things they talked about was the possibility of using the Stearns name
related to the outdoor grounds or a jarden, or something alona those Iines. As discussed last time,
some of the ideas that Mrs. Lawson had don't seem to fit with the goals and function of the library as a
branch library, as opposed to a regional library as a part of the Cuyahoga County library system. Ms.
Meyers had very inuch agreed with that. Mrs. Lord said even though it is our library, we are still a
part of that regional concept and so that would have some impact on soine of the things that they
would focus on. Ms. Meyers was very interested, and had met with Mrs. Lawson because she has
given the library one of her books about the travel industry and is aoing to do a book signing and a
book talk in April. Mrs. O'Rourke asked if that was the family that had donated a lot of books. Mr.
Lind indicated that it was the Olmsted fainily. Chairman Lord said the Stearns family was involved
because the books were in various houses. Mrs. Lord said they've done what they said they wouId do,
which is establish a relationship with Donna Meyers as far as working with her to see if they can pull
off something that would be meaningful. Mrs. VanAuken said when you build a school building, you
usually ask the teachers what they think would be good to include. She asked if the county library
system asked the librarians what kind of room space they want the library cut up in. Mr. Corell said
these are cookie cutter buildings. Mrs. VanAuken said she does not think so. She added some of
them are old buildings that have been made over into something else. Mr. Corell said it is a cookie
cutter mentality of what a library is supposed to be that is coining down from the top more than it is
being driven from the bottom. Mrs. VanAuken said teachers like to be asked and like to have some
say. She wondered if it's part of the policy of the county. Mrs. Lord said she can't answer that but
can't believe there wouldn't be some opportunity for involvement. Mr. Corell said they used focus
groups and everything else, put together a master plan so they don't have to go through this every time
they put up a new library. Mrs. O'Rourke said they also take into consideration the city. Mr. Corell
said they do consider other things. Mrs. VanAuken said she would hate to have them build a building
that someone discovers two years later could have been so much better if there had been input. Mrs.
Lord suggested that Mrs. VanAuken call Ms. Meyers to discuss it. Mr. Corell said part of his
5
