RECEPTION OF VISITOIaS: Mr. Roman Pohlid, Mr. Bob Tramp
IV. NEW SUSINESS:
1. Roman Pohlid 27040 Butternut Ridge - Resident is seekina permit for siding
Mr. John Tobin, a contractor, came forward to address the board on behalf of Mr. Pohlid. He indicated
they have selected the finest product that Alcoa makes. He indicated he brought a sample. He said they
will also maintain the trim as it is, which they believe is very important. He then reviewed the plan for
siding, insulation, etc., including the specifications. Mr. Pohlid came forward and gave some background
on the history of his ownership of the home. Mr. Barker said he noticed there are shutters in the front, and
there is a yellow and red trim around the bedroom windows. Mr. Pohlid indicated it is red and some green.
Mr. Barker asked if the trim around the windows, where it looks like painted red wood, will be blocked in.
Mr. Tobin reviewed pictures of how the home looks now and indicated he has done some other homes in
the area. He mentioned a home in Lakewood that is 168 years old; the second oldest home in Lakewood.
He said that home is sided. He said these kinds of homes can be re-done if you take your time. He
reviewed how the work is done around windows. He reviewed further the specifications for the proposed
work. Mr. Barker asked if Mr. Tobin will try to duplicate the wood trim Mr. Pohlid currently has around
the windows. Mr. Tobin said it will be as they see it. The colors will change. He reviewed ways in which
to avoid any buckling problems. He referred to using shadow lines and being able to conceal the nails. He
mentioned work around the foundation that eliminates some of the insect problems that can be created with
siding a home. He said he likes to have a building inspector come by a couple of times per week when
working on a home. Mr. Barker asked if he has plans to change the garage door. Mr. Tobin said they will
use a soffit system. He referred to a house on Hilliard as an example. Mrs. Lord asked if that will be in
keeping with the age of the house. Mr. Tobin explained his reasoning with going that route. Mrs.
VanAuken asked if the house is now covered with wood. Mr. Tobin replied it is. Mrs. VanAuken asked if
they intend to cover it with aluminum. Mr. Tobin explained they plan to use vinyl siding. He said it looks
like wood. Mrs. VanAuken indicated this issue comes up often and the board likes to keep the older homes
looking as much like the original home as possible. There is a reluctance to have homes covered with
metal. Mr. Tobin said the Dutchland look recreates the old style siding. Mrs. Lord asked for the width of
the boards to be used. Mr. Tobin said the current boards are 4 1/2 and the new would be 5. Mr. Pohlid said
that the wood is unable to hold paint for any duration of time. Mr. Lang asked whether N1r. Pohlid has
looked into removing the wood and replacing it with wood. Mr. Pohlid indicated he has not and cost is a
concern. Mr. Tobin pointed out that would not help with the issue of heat escaping. Mr. Lang said one of
the notes they have in their records indicates that the home was professionally insulated resulting in low
utility costs. Mr. Pohlid indicated that notation refers to the basement. There was further discussion of
insulation issues. Mrs. Lord commented that Mr. Pohlid's home is one of the oldest homes in town. She
said the board's role is to preserve and protect the integrity of the district as well as work with Mr. Pohlid
