.
said that when he was a principal and visiting other schools, he saw many different facilities. He
said it is frustrating because you know you cannot do some of what these other communities are
doing. Mr. Frazier said he will get clarification on what committee Mr. Raig is involved with. He
said if they are moving forward with a facilities plan for next year, they should take a serious look
at the cultural arts. It may not be a separate facility but at least a cultural arts facility. There was
discussion of the very large facility in Strongsville. Mr. Frazier said the high school auditorium is
also very large. Mr. Garland said part of the problem is they have not had any new schools built in
the last 40 years. Mrs. App said she doesn't see this community putting up money to do anything of
this scale. She has worked on school levies for some time and this last one was too much. She has
never seen anything like it. If they are talking about another operating levy in 2005 or a bond issue
for facilities, it just won't happen. Mr. Garland suggested bringing in people from other
communities that are involved with cultural arts. Mrs. Martindale said she was at the Recreation
Center earlier in the day and there was a big empty room. She met with a very nice young man
named Chris Wetmore. She told him she was interested in using the big room for putting on a play.
He was very interested in the idea. Mrs. Martindale explained to him some of the previous
problems they have had with the middle school and Old Town Hall. She said Mrs. Kilbane, the
Assistant Clerk, is looking into the possibility of using Old Town Hall but she thinks that idea will
be vetoed. She said the city does not want anyone going down in the basement because the records
are kept there. She said she is extremely angry about the last tiine the hall was used. She is
something of a tea-toadler and she never lets an actor drink. She said someone from the city
accused them of leaving beer cans in the hall and that is an out and out lie. Mrs. App said she
would like to find out the status of the Senior Center. She envisions a small 100-seat theater to be
used for a variety of purposes. There should be a strict provision that the stage is deep enough that
things can be kept on the stage but under lock and key and there would still be room for
presentations or recitals. Mrs. App recommended that the Dover Players should get dibs on
scheduling. She said if this Senior Center thing is viable, she would like to see the commission
push it ahead to make a small theater get put there. Above and beyond that, she doesn't see much
point in the commission existing. Mrs. Birney said she was attracted to the idea of the commission
because the Mayor said there would be a new facility. Mrs. App said for a school system and
community of this size to not have one central administrative building that suits their purposes and
a place to have proper board meetings, is a shame.
B. App made a motion that if the Senior Center facility is a viable project she would like the
effort of the Cultural Activities Commission to facilitate and promote a small performing arts
center in conjunction with or attached to the Senior Center. The motion was seconded by B.
Martandale and unanimously approved.
Mrs. Kilbane suggested that along with the motion, the board considers drafting a memo to the
Mayor and all of Council so they can express their frustration and provide the ideas they have
discussed.
B. App made a motion to have the commission draft a letter to the Mayor and Council that
summarizes what the eommission has discussed so far and requesting information about the
status of the Senior Center. The motion was seconded by B. Martindale and unanimously
approved.
Mrs. App indicated she will e-mail the draft to the board members before it is distributed. Mr.
Frazier asked if the board has a specific mission. Mrs. App said it is included with the packet she
passed out. She said the mission is to encourage, promote, and showcase visual and performance
based arts for the citizens. Mrs. Martindale said she will put on a play somewhere this summer.
3
