Commission Meeting <br />January 14, 1998 <br />Page 2 <br /> <br />Visitors Opportunity to Address Commission: <br />Carolyn Kasler, City Council Member, and a resident, Joe Bouman were present at the <br /> <br />meeting to observe as a matter of interest. <br /> <br /> <br />Report by Recreation Commissioner: <br />Mr. Dolansky reviewed the Administrative Report. He stated that the National Recreation and <br />Parks Association has a video tape available on the “Benefits of Recreation” which has been <br />shown to the managerial staff. The tape has been utilized at staff meetings for Building <br />Supervisors to heighten their awareness to the endless benefits of parks and recreation. <br /> <br />A new procedure has been implemented in responding to accidents at the Recreation Center. <br />A first aid fanny pack kit is available at all times in the Ticket Booth and is to be utilized when <br />responding to an injury. <br /> <br />Donna Szalay, Program Supervisor, coordinated a joint purchase with the North Olmsted <br />Athletic Boosters for new lane lines at a total cost of $1,520. Half the cost was paid by the <br />Summer Swim Team and the other half was paid by the North Olmsted Athletic Boosters. <br />Another joint purchase was also made for a new set of custom back stroke flags which cost <br />$823 and was split between the two groups. <br /> <br />Pat Cunningham, Tennis Supervisor, initiated the new tennis court security entrance system at <br />the beginning of November. The security system is working well. Patrons registered to use <br />the courts are unable to enter until they check in at the ticket booth to register and pay their <br />user fees. <br /> <br />Tom Stein, Maintenance Supervisor, has dealt with a number of equipment repair issues at the <br />end of the year. There was a $1,900 repair to a compressor and the cooling tower pump cost <br />$1,600 to repair. The wood bleachers in the Pool have been deteriorating due to excessive <br />moisture between the wood decking and the metal frame material. Holes were filled and a <br />new rubber walkway was added to all the steps. These bleachers will need to be replaced in <br />the near future and will be somewhat expensive. <br /> <br />Mr. Dolansky discussed an article from Crains Cleveland regarding the opening of several <br />new privately owned ice rinks in the Greater Cleveland Area. He stated that this can help <br />City’s to gradually raise fees and still be considered affordable in comparison to a privately <br />owned facilities which tend to charge much higher fees. He also reviewed an article from <br />Athletic Business on skate board park development. Several parents in North Olmsted have <br />been inquiring about a site for skate boarding in the community and they have indicated that <br />they would be willing to do some fund raising to get it developed. <br /> <br />Mr. Dolansky reviewed the 1997 Pay Per Period Wage Report. He stated that the year went <br />very well even with the minimum wage increases. Next year the full impact of minimum wage <br />increases could be hard on the budget. He stated that in 1997 wages were budgeted at <br />$721,500 and ended the year at $702,700 or approximately $19,000 to the better. The 1997 <br />Quarterly Wage Report was very consistent with last year. In regards to income, the 1997 <br /> <br />
