Recreation Commission Meeting
June 5, 2006
Page Two

Independence Day Bike Contest

The Independence Day Bike Contest, Parade and Picnic are scheduled for Tuesday, July 4, 2006
beginning at 9:30 a.m. This event was officially designated last year as a non-political/non-commercial
event. The Rec Department has received inquiries from people as to joining the parade, but they have

been told no, it is strictly the bikesand organizations such as the Scouts; other than that, it will be the
kids. Ms. Drenski informed Ms. Jones that Community Council’s money has been received for the
candy and prizes ($200 – more than enough – and Ms. Jones said the extra money should be donated
towards something else, such as the Department of Human Resources’ Food Bank.) Ms. Jones asked
if helpers were needed for the event. Ms. Drenski said they were needed to make hot dogs and the
soda pop and whoever wants to come to help is welcomed. Ms. Jones asked what time the volunteers
should arrive; Ms. Drenski said that the Parade starts at 10:00 a.m.; the food is handed out about
Noon – perhaps 10:30 or 11:00 a.m. would be a good time.

Camp Programs/Concessions

th
Ms. Drenski reported on Jenny Couts’ progress with the Camp Programs. As of today, June 5, there
were 204 kids in the first Camp that starts on Monday, June 12, 2006. There were about 160 kids last
year; but this year, there are two Camps. Mr. Baxter asked if these Camps included swimming; Ms.
Drenski replied no, that the Camps used to be called the Playground Program. Ms. Couts renamed it,
“Fun in the Sun Summer Camp,” and the Rec Department is thrilled with the number of kids that are
registered. Each Camp runs for five weeks. A good majority of the kids are now signed up for the
second Camp. Ms. Jones asked how much it cost; Mr. Baxter replied that the cost for the camp is
$250 for a non-resident and $160 for residents. Ms. Drenski said that the hours are from 9:00 a.m. to
4:00 p.m. The kids can come at 8:00 a.m. and pay an extra $25, and many of the campers are opting
for that as well. Ms. Drenski said that Ms. Couts is doing a great job, and it will be a great program
for the kids, Monday through Friday. Mr. Baxter asked how much the college counselors are earning;
Ms. Drenski said she believes it is about $7 or $8 per hour.

However, the Rec Department is planning to have Cammy’s Concession in by Monday, June 12, 2006,
to manage the Concession stand. Mr. Baxter asked how many kids each counselor handled; Ms.
Drenski said there will be ten kids in each group; there are kids, for certain reasons, need to be in a
smaller group, so there are four groups of five kids each (a few kids have special needs that require
more attention). The Rec Department is getting the counselors trained this week. Jenny Couts has
done a lot of work; there will be a field trip every week, and Jenny puts much effort into making good
programs.

Jenny has put a lot of thought into the groups that are coming together; she put much time and effort
with regard to the counselors when she interviewed them. She had specific questions for them. She
asked what they wanted to get out of the Program; what they did with children; what are their future
goals with children; many of the counselors are in or about to be in college education programs for
Page 2
