Minutes of a Meeting of the <br />North Olmsted Parks and Recreation Commission <br />November 6, 2006 <br />Page Two <br /> <br />include new family-friendly restrooms and also a new playground area for the two to five year old <br />children, plus some additional path access. The City is hoping that these improvements are a catalyst <br />for future vision to the Park being more ADA acceptable and ADA friendly. The City has ADA <br />compliant playground equipment, but it is not always most welcoming to those people with disabilities <br />and their communities. The City’s consultants are here tonight to put together this information and <br />will be presenting the restroom and playground components. This will be introduced in legislation this <br />week at Council and throughout the bid. Any comments or suggestions or modifications need to be <br />incorporated quickly into the plan. The City looks for the Commission’s approval to the Board <br />tonight or any comments or recommendations you might have. There will be a presentation and then a <br />question and answer period. <br /> <br />At this point, Mr. Ken Emling, an architect with Richard Bowen & Associates, introduced himself and <br />made his presentation. He said that he has been working on the family restrooms that the company <br />will provide off the back of the Senior Center. He said that after his discussion, he will turn the floor <br />over to Chris Meyer, the Consultant with Meyer Design working on the playground equipment being <br />proposed. He showed a few pictures of the current playground and asked the attendees to keep them <br />in mind for when Chris Meyer made his presentation. <br /> <br />Mr. Emling then reviewed the family restrooms under consideration. He showed a representation of <br />the existing Senior Center Building. Along the north wall, directly opposite the kitchen and storage <br />room, there will be a new facility built for ADA compliant family restrooms. The building is very <br />simple. Mr. Emling showed a picture of the back wall of the building. The new restrooms will consist <br />of two rooms, containing a sink and toilet. There are a number of different components that will make <br />them family friendly. The building itself will blend into the existing facility. The brick will be almost <br />an exact match; the eaves will match the pitch of the roof and the shingles, so that when the building is <br />finished and coming off the back it will blend evenly. He presented a view of the brick to be used that <br />is an extremely close match to the existing building. The accessories will make the rooms family- <br />friendly. There will be child seats to restrain a one-year old on the toilet. There will be a diaper- <br />changing station will be on the wall. Directly adjacent to that will be a sanitary material dispenser, and <br />next to that will be the waste receptacle. There will be electric hand dryers; there will be no paper <br />towels for sanitary purposes as well as for someone stealing them or messing up the rooms with the <br />paper. All the accessories will be in stainless steel and built into the wall; a toilet tissue dispenser, <br />stainless steel vandal-resistant and lockable. There will also be a toilet seat cover, again, of stainless <br />steel. There will be a liquid soap dispenser of stainless steel. There will be a framed mirror above the <br />sink of tempered glass (tempered as in you car’s windshield, which, when broken, it breaks into many <br />pieces and not large shards of glass). The floor will be of concrete with a sealer on it; there will be a <br />floor drain in the center to allow the maintenance crew to clean; and the walls will be of concrete <br />block with an epoxy paint. The interior of the rooms is designed to be easy to maintain and to be <br />vandal resistant, as the rooms will be not be attended all the time. The plans are very simple.
