Recreation Commission Meeting
April 7, 2003

?

Special Children First's school age summer camp will be divided into two parts. A sliding scale based on family size and income is available to accommodate
families needing assistance.
?

Special Children First's year-round childcare program for 2-1/2 to 5 year olds with special
needs will hold summer programming from June through August and operate independently of
Camp I and II. Childcare will be available throughout the summer on the center's regular
schedule of 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The standard rate for childcare is
$126.00/week."

Exhibit A
A copy of this letter is attached hereto and made a part hereof as .

Mr. DiSalvo continued by saying this is more than a pilot program. This summer, the multi-
purpose room will be used. There were some conflicting times such as cartooning and karate, but
aside from those programs, SCF will have that room. The Commissioner received an E-mail from
Don Copeland stating that, "On my return from vacation last week, I talked to Bill (Jacobs) about
your inquiry as to any grant funds he may have to purchase the material for creating privacy with
the windows in the room at the NORC. He said he would pursue a discussion with you about
this. Thanks for your efforts and partnership!!" Mr. DiSalvo said that the windows will be
"frosted" for privacy, especially for SCF. They are using our facility in reciprocation; Mr.
DiSalvo continued that through the grants and funds received, this would help out the Rec Center
as well. Any other needs SCF has are either being paid by SCF or having them paid. There will
be swimming and ice skating. Whatever snacks they have they will be buying, not coming
through the Rec Center budget. Ms. Hayes asked if rent would be charged. Mr. DiSalvo replied
no, it's all part of the partnership. Mr. Jesse stated that one of the things SCF needs the Rec
Center for is credibility through the Rec's backing.

Mr. DiSalvo asked if there were any questions regarding SCF. Ms. Jones asked the dates of the
program, and how many people can join the program. Mr. DiSalvo replied that there is a cap of
thth
12 children and young adults, and the program runs June 9 through August 15. When school
starts, they will have use of the facility before and after school. Part of the reason they are using
the facility before school is that a lot of the children are going to school without breakfast. As
early as 6:00 to 7:30 a.m., breakfast will be served. SCF is providing all the transportation as
well. Everything is provided. The Rec Center will be its hub. Mr. Baxter asked that if a
disadvantaged child's parent had a question, would they call the Rec Center. Mr. DiSalvo replied
no, that they will call SCF. The information for contacting SCF will be included in the new
brochure, where Horizons used to be.
Page 3
