w
CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION
NORTH OLMSTED, OHIO
MINUTES - September 27, 1984
The regular meeting of the North Olmsted Civil Service Commission
was called to order at 8:00 P.M. by Chairman Phillip Huffman. In
attendance were Commissioner Gareau, Fire Chief VanKuren, Police
Lieutenant Krynak, Dr. Maldonado and secretary Judith Gilbert.
Correspondence: The letter of September 5 from James Kline re
the status of the Bus Mechanics for the schools was read. Commissioner
Gareau is to talk to Mr. Kline to determine if this position is
testable.
OLD BUSINESS: At Chief VanKuren's request Dr. Maldonado appeared
before the Commission to express his concerns.on testing candidates
for Fire Fighter specifically in the area of vision. Chief VanKuren
stated that his current candidates for the Fire Fighter position all
have vision problems._..
It was the feeling that the Civil -Service Commission needs to come
forward and say that these are the standards we want to follow.
Once these standards have been established, we have to stand by
them. In the past, we have been operating -on a case by case situation.
The.secretary was instructed to write letters to communities similar
in growth to North Olmsted to determine if they are following similar
standards when hiring Fire Fighters/Patrolmen. Due to the fact that
the current secretary is resigning, these letters will be done at a
later time.
Police Captain Promotion Test: --Lieutenant Krynak brought in a copy
of the job description for this position. The decision was reached
that this -would give McCann adequate information to proceed with
a test for this position, and basically there -should be no change
from the previous test. Test is scheduled for November 8 with three
Lieutenants taking the test.
Secondary Head Custodian Promotion Test: Scheduled for November 1,
four custodians are taking the exam.
Fire Fighter Examination: -Scheduled for November 29. Ads are
appearing in the SUN HERALD and CHRONICLE TELEGRAM on Thursday,
October -4 and -11.
NEW -BUSINESS: The question was raised as to the necessity of
retaining on eligibility lists the names of candidates who have
been.contacted for the position but who have taken other positions,
but still want to remain on the list.
Adjournment: There being no further business, the next meeting of
eivi'=ervice Commission was scheduled for Thursday, October%25
4.30At P.M. and the meeting was adjourned.
Re ectfully submitted,
Ju th Gilbert Phillip Huffman
cretary
