MINUTES - NOVEMBER 15, 1984 - Page 2
Ar. Dickson and Mr. Walsh:
Mr. Dickson's check was made payable to North Olmsted Civil
Service and Mr. Walsh's check was made payable to $10.00.
After hearing the appeal Mr. Dickson and Mr. Walsh were
informed that the Commission, as in the case of Mr. Stanfield, could not make exception
for them without making exception for the rest. Motion was made by Mr. McKay to reject
Mr. Dickson's application which was approved with Paul Gareau dissenting. Motion made
by Mr. McKay to reject Mr. Walsh's application was approved unanimously.
Mrs. Gilbert then stated that the fourth candidate to request a hearing for rejected
Firefighter application, Mr. Trapp, did not attend the hearing.
Mr. Angle: Mr. Angle wanted to confirm that he was still on the qualified list of
Patrolman, which exam was taken in the spring. Mr. Angle was advised that
he would be contacted when his name became next on the list.
Visual Standards for Firefighters: There was discussion at the last meeting regarding
visual standards for Firefighters, and also new
applicant physical standards as submitted under
letter'from Gene Petre, Safety Director, which are currently being used by Dr. Maldonado
and also the City of Cleveland. Dr: Huffman stated he felt we should adopt these new
applicant physical standards with the exception of the visual standardsincluded. Dr.
Huffman then introduced a set of visual standards recommended in the Journal of the
American Optometric Association, and then moved we accept the new applicant physical
standards as submitted by Gene Petre with the exception that the visual standards be
substituted with those submitted by Dr. Huffman. Motion passed unanimously.
Chief VanKuren then submitted a letter from Dr. Maldonado regarding Mr. Charles Novak
who is being interviewed and physically examined as a prospective Firefighter. Dr.
Maldonado stated in his letter that he could neither approve or reject Mr. Novak since
Mr. Novak has a vision problem that he feels could cause him harm in this line of
employment. According to the newly adopted visual standards, Dr. Huffman stated, Mr.
Novak would not pass the visual test. Chief VanKuren informed the Commission that
another applicant was in the same position as Mr. Novak regarding a vision problem. Mrs:
Westerfeld was instructed to -check with law Director Michael Gareau regarding this matter
to request a legal opinion.. Chief VanKuren then requested that both candidates be removed
from the eligibility list pending opinion by Law Director Gareau, since both gentlemen
would not pass any visual standards.
Adjournment: Ihere being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at approximately
9:55 p.m.'
Respectfully submitted,
1-aW
Sandi Westerfeld
Secretary
2^ tVAY 1
Dr. Phillip
Chairman
Off vu_
Huffman
