MINUTES - NOVEMBER 15, 1984 - Page 2 <br />Ar. Dickson and Mr. Walsh: <br />Mr. Dickson's check was made payable to North Olmsted Civil <br />Service and Mr. Walsh's check was made payable to $10.00. <br />After hearing the appeal Mr. Dickson and Mr. Walsh were <br />informed that the Commission, as in the case of Mr. Stanfield, could not make exception <br />for them without making exception for the rest. Motion was made by Mr. McKay to reject <br />Mr. Dickson's application which was approved with Paul Gareau dissenting. Motion made <br />by Mr. McKay to reject Mr. Walsh's application was approved unanimously. <br />Mrs. Gilbert then stated that the fourth candidate to request a hearing for rejected <br />Firefighter application, Mr. Trapp, did not attend the hearing. <br />Mr. Angle: Mr. Angle wanted to confirm that he was still on the qualified list of <br />Patrolman, which exam was taken in the spring. Mr. Angle was advised that <br />he would be contacted when his name became next on the list. <br />Visual Standards for Firefighters: There was discussion at the last meeting regarding <br />visual standards for Firefighters, and also new <br />applicant physical standards as submitted under <br />letter'from Gene Petre, Safety Director, which are currently being used by Dr. Maldonado <br />and also the City of Cleveland. Dr: Huffman stated he felt we should adopt these new <br />applicant physical standards with the exception of the visual standardsincluded. Dr. <br />Huffman then introduced a set of visual standards recommended in the Journal of the <br />American Optometric Association, and then moved we accept the new applicant physical <br />standards as submitted by Gene Petre with the exception that the visual standards be <br />substituted with those submitted by Dr. Huffman. Motion passed unanimously. <br />Chief VanKuren then submitted a letter from Dr. Maldonado regarding Mr. Charles Novak <br />who is being interviewed and physically examined as a prospective Firefighter. Dr. <br />Maldonado stated in his letter that he could neither approve or reject Mr. Novak since <br />Mr. Novak has a vision problem that he feels could cause him harm in this line of <br />employment. According to the newly adopted visual standards, Dr. Huffman stated, Mr. <br />Novak would not pass the visual test. Chief VanKuren informed the Commission that <br />another applicant was in the same position as Mr. Novak regarding a vision problem. Mrs: <br />Westerfeld was instructed to -check with law Director Michael Gareau regarding this matter <br />to request a legal opinion..
