CITY OF NORTH OLMSTF®
CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION
NORTH OLMSTE®, OHIO
NORTH OLMSTED CIVIL SERVICE MEETING
March 24, 1988
Present: Police Chief Marsh, Fire Chief Van Kuren, Finance Dirctor,
Edw. Boyle, Commission members: Madeline Brookshire, Robert
Wendt. Absent from meeting: Commissioner Stroh and sec'y
Peg Hill.
Minutes of the previous meeting approved as submitted.
OLD BUSINESS:
The future possibility of physical agility testing of candidates by St.
John/West Shore Hospital was discussed at this meeting. Representatives
from the hospital attended the civil .service meeting in February and
presented their proposal of testing safety force candidates. The
commissioners felt we were not prepared at this time, due primarily to
finances, to enter into an agreement with the hospital. Commissioners
requested the secretary to communicate by letter with the hospital.
representatives and instruct them to keep us advised of the program as
they offer these services to surrounding communities.
The commissioners discussed the vision test of candidates, and agreed
that a preliminary eye examination could be administered by the
commissioners, under the direction of Dr. Maldonado, at the time the
physical agility test is given. The St. John/West Shore decision along
with the vision testing of candidates will be discussed with Mr. Stroh,
but the feeling at this meeting was that all commissioners were in
agreement.
NEWS BUSINESS:
Both the fire and police chiefs were invited to this meeting by the
commission to discuss the possibility of future testing of a
Clerk/Dispatcher. The thought of the commission was that one test could
be given for a clerk/dispatcher'with.a ranked certified list being
established. Both departments could access this list for personnel.
The commission would therefore be deleting seperate tests. The
classified advertising of this test would show that some of the position
differ in starting salary, hours of employmnent, and prerequisite
ofschooling, after employment. Much discussion followed with both
chiefs, and the commission, satisfied at this point that such a test
might become a future reality.
Police Candidate Test:
Commissioners discussed the upcoming police candidate test with Chief
Marsh. The high.cost of advertising in the -classified section of local
newspapers was discussed. In an effort to curtail some of the expenses
the commission felt that an attachment to the application, to be
returned to the commission along with the application, would indicate
