CIVIL SERVICE MEETING MINUTES
DECEMBER 17, 1992
PAGE 2
OLD BUSINESS
Hiring practices for North Olmsted. Mr. Gundy said to invite the
Mayor, Mike Gareau, Ron Wilamosky to the next civil service meeting to
review the classified/non-classified positions. Jim Hines asked that
this be the first on the agenda and the meeting will be held at
4:30 pm on January 28, 1993 in the Caucus Room at City Hall. Special
letters will be going out asking that these people attend and that
they bring any related material with them.
Ernest Cummings of the High School said he spoke to Mr. Gareau and Mr.
Gareau said that the City and Counsel has nothing to do with if the
High School should continue to have civil service testing for certain
positions. Mr. Cummings felt that it would be in the best interest to
do away with civil service because the school has 13 secretaries that
fall under civil service testing.
Pat Harrison mentioned that these secretaries deal with children and
parents regarding abuse, drugs, suicide etc. which can happen anytime
of the day. Each day is different. These secretaries need to keep
themselves under control. It's not like all they do is type all day.
Civil Service can test for this position and hire someone who can
handle the office yet how can you test for people working with people?
These secretaries must be able to work with people.
Jim Hines said that he will talk to Mike Gareau and limit our
jurisdiction to testing for city employees only and Mike can then
handle the paperwork. Jim Hines will also check with Dennis Allen and
see what Westlake and Rocky River did when they did away with the
secretarial civil service testing.
Jim Hines made the motion to do away with the civil service
secretarial testing for the High School ASAP. Glenn Marks seconded
the motion. Once this has been done, Ernest Cummings will be
notified.
NEW BUSINESS
Tracy Ice will call some cities that are the same size. as North
Olmsted and see how much there commissioners get paid for their
meetings. She'll be contact Lakewood, Cleveland Heights, Euclid and
Garfield.
