North Olmsted, Ohio 44070 Phone: 777-8000 Ext, 232 Fax: 777-5889 TO: Ron Wilamosky Carolyn Kasler FROM: Jim Hines, Civil Service Commission SUBJECT: Jackie Smith Secretarial II Situation DATE: March 21, 1995 At our regular meeting on March 20th, the Civil Service Commission met with Jackie Smith, who attended the meeting, to discuss her recent lay-off from the Police Department. According to Mrs. Smith, she was hired from the Civil Service Eligibility List and vas employed in the Police Department for approximately 2 months before being laid off. Her lay-off was triggered by Cheryl Sears' desire to move back to her former job in the Police Department. Ms. Sears' transfer back to the Police Department created a vacancy in the Building Department. Based on the facts presented to the Commission, it is our opinion that Mrs. Smith should be hired for the vacant position in the Building Department. At the request of the city (Mr. Wilamosky and Mr. Gareau), C_omnis-s-ion-h_ad-_el mina -ted th.e=typing portion of our secretarial testri_-0_ct-o-b-er__o.f-__199-3;. The Commission has determined that a typing t�est--cahnbt�--be -required under the current eligibility list. This typing test was eliminated under the City's request in October 1993, this was so that the City could retain several "provisional" secretaries. Mr. Paul Grayshaw of the ASSCME was also in attendance at the meeting and indicated that the union thought Mrs. Smith would be transferred to the position in the Building Department, even though Mrs. Smith was not yet a union member.
