r CIVIL SERVICE MEETING MINUTES JANUARY 1.5, 1996 PAGE 2 The Commission decided to make a requirement that each Police candidate must have O..P.O.T.A. Certification. Standard and Associates will be the testing company which we will use for -the test. Chief Viola will get addresses and phone numbers -of schools with O.P.O.T.A. training and give the list to Civil Service. Chief Viola said that in the past candidates had to be sponsored by a Police Department to get the O.P.•O.T.A training but now it's not that way. The candidates can go,to Kent State, Cuyahoga Community, a school in Medina etc. to get O.P.O.T.A. training. By doing this route of testing, we would save lots of money. The trai-ning"time for the candidates is 6=7 months and therefore: -the candidate's are not useful to the Department until they can get,on the road after 7 months has passed. Notification of when this test will be given will be sent to the schools for academy graduates only. Jim Hines will call the Cuyahoga County Commission to see if they know of any city giving a Police Agility test. If we find a city giving this test, we would check and see if we could get a few candidates from our eligibility list, who is waiting to take an agility test, the test. Tracy Ice called St. John and West Shore to see if by chance they could test a few candidates for us at their facility but they could not. Extra credit will be given only for military for the Entry Level Police Exam. In the next two years the Chief anticipate -s hiring 4 officers (retirement replacements). Per Jim Hines, Civil Service will no longer -be sending advertisements to minority churches.- We will continue to advertise in the Call & Post and other local newspapers. Carolyn Kasler asked if there is extra credit given for candidates living in the city. Jim Hines said no. A secretarial test is also needed. Ron Wilamosky had mentioned, a while back, that he would like us to use Cooperative Personnel Services for the written test #3126. When there is a vacancy, then the Personnel Department will take the top three candidates and give them a typing test. They must type 40 wpm or better to pass the second portion of the test along with an interview.
