,k
clerk when would notices be sent out indicating we are giving a police officers test. The clerk
indicated she had spoken to the police chief ,and he indicated officer Placica's position would
have to be filled. The last two applications were forwarded to Chief Ruple, if any of the last five
candidates fail the background investigation the list will be invalid, and an entry level police test
will need to be given as soon as possible. Mr. Cummings asked Captain Whelan are you asking
us to make a ruling on this issue tonight or can it be discussed at the next regular meeting.
Captain Whelan indicated that if the list becomes invalid the police chief would like a test to be
given in January 1999. Mr. Cummings asked the clerk to request the money for an entry level
police test, that could possibly be given in January 1999. Mr. Cummings asked if the police
department would have a problem if the Ohio Peace Officer Training was dropped and no points
were given for having the certificate. Captain Whelan indicated he would need to speak to
Chief Ruple as they had not discussed that possibility. The basic reason for asking the Ohio
Peace Officer Training requirement be removed is 1) it limits the possibilities. 2) The certificate
is only good for one year if the candidate is not hired within one year of receiving the certificate
he will have to go back to school for a set amount of hours to have it activated again. 3) A
candidate having an Ohio Peace Officer Training certificate is not a certified police officer, it just
indicates he has a very basic training towards becoming one. No further discussion was heard.
E. Cummings motioned to table the discussion of the Ohio Peace Officers Training issue until
the next regular scheduled meeting. The motion was seconded by J. Thomay, and unanimously
approved.
X ADJOURNMENT:
Meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
Ernest R. Cummings, Chairman
D. Rote, Clerk of Commissions
1-4
