This request was for a fence on a corner lot, involving a 15 -foot variance for the side and rear <br />yard. The code required 20 feet. but the applicant provided 5 feet. The variance was sought for <br />privacy due to having young children, particularly a two-year-old prone to darting towards the <br />street. The code section 1163.231 prohibits signs with flashing or <br />moving lights, making this variance request exceptional. Childhood memories were recounted of <br />a twinkling sign at a movie theater and it was expressed that a desire to recreate that experience at <br />their own theater in Grand Rapids. It was emphasized the dramatic showmanship aspects of the <br />sign. inspired by the Chicago Theater sign. The sign aimed to be iconic and a landmark for the <br />community. Reassurance was made about the adjustability of the flashing mechanism to address <br />concerns about potential seizure -inducing lights. It was highlighted that this was the first time such <br />a request had been brought before the board. Previous potential applicants were advised agaist it <br />due to location concerns.
