maintenance and may require repainting after 10-15 years due to fading, but newer vinyl materials
have longer fade durations,up to 50 years with Norandex, and require very little maintenance.
Mr.Parry finally stated that the current shingle siding does not match the original siding and does
not have an appropriate condition and appearance, and he requested that the Landmarks
Commission determine that the proposed vinyl clapboard siding over the existing cement shingles
is an appropriate improvement to this particular small house.
Mr.Neville explained that according to the City Guidelines, vinyl is not an acceptable material for
siding.Mr. O'Malley advised that the applicant receive the City correspondence, which contained
the Building Commissioner's comments on the application.Mr.Parry inquired whether any of the
commission members had used the Hardie Board for home siding.Mr.Neville responded that none
of the commission members had done so, but that there are some homes in the historic area that
have Hardi Board siding.
Ms. Schuler stated that she supports the certificate of appropriateness for this application since it
is close to the original view of the home and the additional cost of siding may prevent the house
from being maintained. The commission agreed to table the application to give the applicant
adequate time to consider the building commissioner's comments on his application and make a
decision on his request.
Mr.Gearhart moved,Mr.Dubowski seconded,to table the application until next Landmarks
Commission meeting on 10/10/22; motion passed 8-0.
OLD BUSINESS
Springvale Ballroom Landmark Designation
Mr.Neville stated that Ms. Egan-Reeves attended the Planning and Design Commission meeting
and made a presentation to the members, and the Planning and Design Commission approved the
Springvale Ballroom Landmark Designation proposal.
Ms. Parsipour then read the Planning and Design Commission meeting minute about the
Springvale Ballroom Landmark Designation and indicated that the commission had approved it.
Mr. O'Malley added that the Planning and Design Commission recommended the proposal to the
City Council, so it would be at the City Council agenda for the next step or it might need to go to
BZD.
COMMUNICATIONS
Certificates of Appropriateness
Mr.Neville explained the minor change approval for 26723 Butternut Ridge Road, which was for
the replacement of the roof and gutter; the applicant was changing from one shade of brown to
another shade of brown on a ranch home.
Ms. Parsipour then asked the members if they would like to continue future meetings virtually or
in person.Mr.O'Malley suggested doing a survey through email or in person, and members agreed.
As a result,Ms.Parsipour will conduct an email survey to the members in this regard.
ADJOURNMENT
3
