BUILDING DEPAR'IlMIIV'.C REQUESTS :
1) Sunset Memorial Park, 6265 Columbia Road.
Proposal to construct chapel at the north end of property.
The court has found that Council's decision of 8/11/88 overriding the Board of
Zoning Appeals' ruling that the above proposal was a permitted use was incorrect
and subsequently overturned the decisi.on.
Mr. and Mrs. Ba.racski, owners, presented the plans for the chapel and explained
it will be constructed where the caretakers house and some maintenance buildings
are now located; offices and an apartment for the caretaker will be an the second
floor. At present the existing mausoleun is used for viewing and services prior
to burial. The hours vary according to the family:s preference. The members
studied pictures of the area. One drive zaill be eliminated and a new drive will
be installed to this chapel at a point where Columbia Road is four lanes (main
drive to existing chapel is located where Columbia is two lanes). Pole lights are
planned for the parking lot, but no height has been specified and they will
follow Plarming Commission's recommendation; the chapel will be lighted at night
and probably stay lighted tmtil dawn as the existing mausoleiun is lighted now.
Mr. Skoulis pointed out tha.t the new building will be closer to Columbia Road and
the residents across the street. The chapel will be 137 feet back from the right
of way and there is an existing 3 to 4 foot hedge along Columbia Road. Seventy
parking.spaces are shown, and Building Conrnnissioner Conway stated when this
building is fully developed 73 spaces will.be required. The existing office 5pace
w-ill remain along with new office space. Mr. Baracski stated that drivers usually
park along the side of the roads for services. If much more parking were required
they would consider having valet parking. Mr. Gorris stated that if they really
did not need the required parking, some of.the required spaces could be land-
banked. Building Commissioner Conway advised that this proposal must be approved
under the former zoning code (original proposal presented prior to adopting the
present codes), it does conform to the new code except for the setback of a sid6
canopy. The owners clarified that having the viewing here would eliminate some
funeral processions down Columbia Road. In response to Mr. Wilms, a resident of
_ ?.
1
