Cameron Alston, T. Brennan, T. Herbster, R. Koeth, A. Manuiug, K. O'Rourke,
and R. Tallon.
Also Present: Assistant Law Director Dubelko, City Engineer Deiclvnanu, Assistant Building
Commissioner Rymarczyk, and Clerk of Commissions Oring.
II. REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF MINUTES:
R. Tallon moved to approve the minutes of Ju1y 23, 1996, seconded by T. Brennan, and
unanimously approved.
III. BUII.DING DEPARTMENT REQUESTS:
1) Chuck E Cheese, 26104 Great Northern Shoppiug Center.
Proposal to install back-lit awnings on existing building.
Mr. Townsend, representing Chuck E. Cheese, explained that they have remodeled 192 stores
of their 233 locations. He maintained that the parents of their customers preferred to have
additional lighting for the safety of their children and these changes have beeu very well
received at the other locations. The awnings will be red with 6 inches of yellow at the bottom
and have been designed to have a inuuinum of translucence. There will be no logo or signage on
the awnings. He presented photographs, including night photos, of the awnings at other
locations. Mr. Brennan suggested that the ligb.ts could be directed down to light up the area
rather than lightiug up the awniing. Mr. Towusend believed that this way it creates a larger
image for the building. He clarified that the logo will be on the sign band, since they were not
allowed to install the large logo on the bu.ilding as shown in the pictures. Mr. Tallon explained
that the commission has no problem with lighting up the sidewalk with down lights, but lighting
the awning basically makes the entire area a big sign. Since there is an existing canopy over the
sidewalk, Mr. 1Vlamiing suggested putting recessed lights in the canopy. Mr. Townsend believed
that the awnings made the building more attractive, but some of the awnings are lighted only by
down lights. It was noted that the coiwnission had denied back lit awnings for other businesses.
The members discussed other options, such as down lights in the canopy without the awnings.
Mr. Townsend argued that they have had a good response to the awniugs. Mr. Tallon
suggested that they could add an awning o£ cloth or a wood type of material with a down light
in it that does not light it up, but not a sign material. Mr. Townsend stated that this awning
material would not fade and would last longer. The members would prefer down lighting
without au awuing and believed that a back lit awning really cheapened the effect of building,
especially since this was in a shopping center, not a free standing building. It was suggested that
if they waut an awning it should match the color of the building, it should be a different
material, and not back lit. It was agreed that Mr. Townsend would resubmit and will return to
the commission. Mr. Corsi, representing the owner of the shopping center, advised that he had
reviewed these plans and had looked at the other sites. They did reject the 6 foot high Chuck
E. Cheese on top of the building. When Tony Roma's remodeled , an awning was added, and
was their opinion that it enhanced the building..
