Gareau, Jr., Councilman
Randi Jones, Member
William D. Kelley, Member
Ted DiSalvo, Commissioner

Absent: Anna Kanis, Member

Visitors: Duane Limpert, Councilman
Linda Powell, Tennis Patron, Observer

OFFICIAL MINUTES

Meeting was called to order and roll-call taken. Motion was made by Claire Hayes to accept the
March Minutes. The Motion was seconded by Bill Kelley, with no corrections noted. Roll was
called; Motion passed.

REPORT BY COMMISSIONER

Mr. DiSalvo began his report by opening a discussion on the condition of the basketball courts.
He and other Rec Center staff members (Tom Stein, Chris Wetmore, Betsy Drenski) spent the day
noting the damage that was happening at the courts, especially the water damage from the rain.
There is standing water on half the court since the drainage system is virtually non-existent. The
one drain that is in place now is too high to do any good. Because of this, the asphalt surface is
being torn apart. Also, the backboards and rims are missing or in poor condition. The playing
surface is unsafe, and the risk for injury is high. The solution is to install a properly leveled
drainage system and new asphalt surface. Long term, this will provide a great playing area for
basketball. Mr. Stein is working with the Service Department to see what can be done; otherwise,
an outside independent contractor should be consulted. Mr. Gareau asked long term members of
the Commission what the cost would be to bring this project about. It was noted that the
Commission talked about doing tennis courts, but they did not do well because of soil conditions,
but there was talk of a basketball court as well. Engineering estimates have been done in the past.
Mr. Gareau said he would review his records to see what he could find on this subject - he
believes the plan was to tear out what is there and start over. Where to get the money? Mr.
DiSalvo said that, after the money to take care of the tennis courts, it was his understanding
through the Finance Department that there would be a remaining balance of $77,000. That
money is targeted for North Olmsted Park. Mr. Gareau asked for an update on the location for
the tennis courts. Mr. DiSalvo replied that there is no other location.
