a
CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
CIVIL SERVICE COMAMSSION
NORTH OLMSTED, 0141O
mor
MINUTES CIVIL SERVICE MEETING - DECEMBER 17, 1987 - TOWN HALL 4:00 P.M.
Present: Chairman, Pat Bahas, Members, Tom Stroh and Bob Wendt.
Secretary, Peg Hill.
Guests: Fire Chief Van Kuren, Reporter, Flash Fairfield.
Minutes approved as submitted.
Regular business meeting suspended to accommodate Chief Van Kuren.
Chief Van Kuren inquired if the four hour.dispatcher/clerical person now
employed at the station could have her hours increased to eight;
allowing her to spend four hours as a dispatcher and four hours doing
clerical work. If this position could be created would it require a
civil service test? This eight hour position would eliminate the need
for a firefighter to stay at the station performing dispatcher work.
The commissioners related that all clerical/dispatchers-working an eight
hour day are civil service tested, the only exception to the testing
process is the secretary to the director. However, the commissioners
would take this matter up with the Law Director.
Chief Van Kuren informed the commission that three of the candidates had
been interviewed for the entry level firefigher position. One did not
pass the vision requirement and after disucssion the Chief related he
would forward that candidate a letter informing him that his name would
be removed from the certified list. Further Chief Van Kuren related he
did find a viable candidate but would like the commission to forward to
him the name of the next candidate.on the ranked list to satisfy his
ultimate decision.
Discussion surrounding the fact that it would .be advantageous for
everyone concerned if the commissioners would be able to test the
candidates, as part of the physical test, for visual acuity. Chief
informed the commission that Dr. Maldonado stated he would educate the
commissioners on the format for visual testing. Or, the candidates
could be required to bring a doctors statement attesting to the fact'the
vision requirement had been met. Commissioners agreed that this
process, if made a part of the application requirement, would save
interview time.
The commissioners stated that a meeting would be held prior to the next
firefighter/paramedic test to review the above recommendation.
Continuation of regular business meeting:..
Secretary informed the commission that a review of the North Olmsted
Rules and Regulations could take place within the next few months as she
had received copies of the Rules from several surrounding districts for
comparison purposes. This process of review would be greatly reduced as
a committee chaired by Pat Bahas brought our North Olmsted Rules up-to-
-date several years ago.
