NEW BUSINESS:
Mr. Cummings modified the agenda slightly and decided to hear `Item B" first since Mr. Kish was
present and this should not take too long.
B) The Fire Fighters examination has been set for May 28, 1998, advertisements ran on April 23,
1998 and April 26, 1998 respectively. Civil Service has received an inquiry from Mr. John P.
Kish petitioning the commission for the opportunity to take the firefighters test without
having received required paramedic certification.
Mr. Kish explained one of the paramedic courses ends two weeks after the date of the
examination. Isis request was to be permitted to take this course pending receipt of a
paramedic certificate as he is almost positive he will pass national registry. As a lifelong
resident of North Olmsted, and a part time fire fighter in Olmsted Falls, with a firefighters
certificate, Mr. Kish was very interested in applying for this position. Pending receiving his
national registry and scoring high enough on the test he requested that the commission
consider giving him the opportunity to participate in the examination for firefighter.
Chairman Cummings advised there are rules set. forth in the "North Olmsted Civil Service
Rules and Regulations Manual" which must be followed. Mr. Cummings quoted from Rule
II, Section 7-d, page 5 of the rules and regulations manual which states "Applicants for
examination of Entry Level appointment to the Fire Department as a Firefighter/Paramedic
MUST have PARAMEDIC CERTIFICATION BEFORE the date of the entry level
examination. The required certification must be in accordance with the level of qualifications
mandated by the North Olmsted Fire Department. A copy of the Certification MUST be
received by the Commission before the date of the examination. Applicant
Firefighter/Paramedics must have maintained appropriate continuing education training hours
as mandated by the State of Ohio for E.M.T. Paramedic recertification."
