CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
"TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE"
CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION
MINUTES - APRIL 19, 1999
7:OOPM
I. ROLL CALL: Vice Chairman, Thomay called the meeting to order at 7:OOpm.
PRESENT: Commissioners, J. Thomay, and L. Zolar.
ALSO PRESENT: Secretary, D. Rote.
ABSENT: Chairman, E. Cummings.
II. DISPOSITION OF THE MINUTES: J. Thomay motioned to approve the March 15, 1999,
Civil Service minutes as written. The motion was seconded by L. Zolar and unanimously
approved.
III. REPORTS:
A) There were 2 correspondences sent out, and 4 correspondences received.
Mrs. Zolar questioned why the candidates were sent a testing date on one day and then a
letter canceling the testing date the next day. Mr. Thomay read aloud Rule 3 section
1,which indicates the candidate will receive the testing date 30 days prior to the testing
date. He further reviewed that the Civil Service Commission did not accept the testing date
until March 15, 1999, which was less than 30 days so the dates of the tests were canceled.
The secretary reviewed that the only way she could have given the candidates 30 day's
notice was if she released the dates prior to the Commissioners approving the dates. No
further comments were made.
J. Thomay motioned to approve the correspondences as submitted. The motion was
seconded by L. Zolar and unanimously approved.
VI. OLD BUSINESS:
A) The Commissioners need to be updated on the Assistant Fire Chiefs promotional exam.
The new date for the Assistant Fire Chiefs exam has been set for Thursday, June 3, 1999,
for the written and Saturday, June 5, 1999, for the oral assessment. The Ohio Fire Chiefs
Association will be administering the examination, which will take place in the Mayors
conference room. The Commissioners will need to make a motion on whether or not they
accept the testing dates.
Vice Chairman, Thomay reviewed the new testing dates, and asked the secretary if she had
tried to get an earlier date. The secretary indicated that because of the time frame of 30
days notice and the week prior to June 3, 1999, being Memorial Day weekend, the above
dates were the earliest dates she could book. Mr. Thomay asked the secretary if the
Mayors conference room had been booked. The secretary indicated Mr. Thomay was
correct. No further comments were made.
J. Thomay motioned to accept the Assistant Fire Chiefs testing dates of Thursday, June 3,
1999, for the written exam, and Saturday, June 5, 1999 for the oral assessment. The
motion was seconded by L. Zolar and unanimously approved.
