CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
RESOLUTION NO. 2005 - 99
By: Mayor O'Grady and All of Council
A RESOLUTION ENCOURAGING THE MEMBERS OF THE UNITED
STATES SENATE TO ENSURE THAT THE SENATE VERSION OF THE
APPROPRIATIONS BILL MIRRORS THE LANGUAGE OF THE HOUSE
VERSION AS IT APPLIES TO FUNDING FOR AERONAUTICS
RESEARCH, THEREBY PROTECTING NASA GLENN FROM PROPOSED
BUDGET CUTS, AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY.
WHEREAS: The Fiscal Year (FY) 2006 Science, State, Justice, and Commerce (SSJC)
Appropriations Bill has been approved by the United States House of
Representatives; and
WHEREAS: The House Bill now funds NASA at $16.5 billion, which is $275 million above
the FY 2005 amount, and $15 million above the President's request; and
WHEREAS: The House Bill restores funding for aeronautics research, to include funding for
hypersonics, to the FY 2005 level of $906 million, and requires the
Administration to develop a national aeronautics policy; and
WHEREAS: Aeronautics research and hypersonics are strengths at NASA Glenn's facilities,
and the loss of such areas at NASA Glenn would have a permanent and disastrous
effect on our work force, educational opportunities, grant funding, and
employment opportunities for graduating students; and
WHEREAS: The economic impact of the loss of NASA Glenn on the cities throughout
northeast Ohio would negatively affect the quality of life of our residents;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
NORTH OLMSTED, COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA, AND STATE OF OHIO:
SECTION 1: That the City of North Olmsted, by its Mayor and Council, and on behalf
of over 34,000 residents, does hereby urge Ohio's United States Senators to oppose proposed job
cuts at the NASA Glenn Research Center by taking action to ensure that the Senate version of
the appropriations bill mirrors the language of the House of Representatives' version as it applies
to funding for NASA and aeronautics research.
SECTION 2: That the Clerk of Council is hereby directed to forward a fully attested
copy of this Resolution, immediately upon passage and approval, to United States Senators Mike
DeWine and George Voinovich, with a copy also being forwarded to United States
Representative Dennis Kucinich.
