<br /> <br />Resolution No. 2008-21 <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br />OF NORTH OLMSTED, CUYAHOGA COUNTY, AND STATE OF OHIO: <br />SECTION 1: That the Mayor be and he is hereby authorized to prepare and file <br />an application to the Ohio Historical Society to designate and obtain an Ohio historical <br />marker for "Joseph Peake's Farm" and that such proposal be substantially in the form and <br />substance of information supplied by the Olmsted Historical Society, as reviewed and <br />approved by the North Olmsted Landmarks Commission, and in accordance with <br />procedural requirements of the Ohio Historical Society. <br />SECTION 2: That the Mayor and Council join together with the Olmsted <br />Historical Society and the North Olmsted Landmarks Commission, not only in support of <br />this application for a historical marker from the Ohio Historical Society, but also in <br />recognition of the significant life, contributions and accomplishments of Joseph and <br />Eleanor Peake, the first African-American settlers in the Cleveland area in 1809, who <br />established residence on then Mastick Plank Road in North Olmsted in the 1840s and <br />who were active members of the Olmsted Wesleyan Church, formed in 1847, and were <br />lcnown to have courageously assisted runaway slaves enroute from Oberlin to Cleveland <br />on the "underground railroad" at the Joseph Peake Farm. <br />SECTION 3: That the Director of Public Service be and he is hereby authorized, <br />upon official acceptance and approval of the Ohio histarical marker for "Joseph Peake's <br />Farm" by the Ohio Historical Society, to place and install said marker within the City's <br />right of way on the south side of Mastick Road, east of Clague Road, in the vicinity of <br />23045 Mastick Road, parcel number 237-28-4, and as such location may be more <br />specifically identified by the Ohio Historical Society's designation form, and that such <br />location within the right of way be otherwise selected in accordance with law and sound <br />engineering practices. <br />SECTION 4: That this Resolution is hereby declared to be an emergency <br />measure immediately necessary far the preservation of the public health, safety and <br />welfare, and further for the reason that it is necessary that this Resolution go into effect <br />immediately in order to recognize this significant aspect of African American history in <br />the City of North Olmsted during the month of February, which is known as Black <br />History Month, and further provided it receives the affirmative vote of two-thirds of all <br />members of Council, it shall take effect and be in force immediately upon its passage and <br />approval by the Mayor. <br />PassED: <br />/. ., / ? <br />First Reading: ?j ? /?? ? <br />Second Reading: 19 Df <br />Third Readin?J <br />Committee: Dr"-? <br />` <br />2 <br />_ , ,. .,?-1-l-,-"??-.m,,.. .G.. . ,,-._. , _.. i ,? t,--., -7 -
