x? <br />Resolution No 2008-23 <br />WHEREAS, employment discriniination in Northern Ireland has historically been cited <br />by the International Commission Jurists as being among the major causes of conflict in that area <br />and the MacBride Principles have significantly contributed to the advanceinent of nonviolent and <br />peaceful resolution thereof; and <br />WHEREAS, 17 States and over 40 municipalities, including the City of C1eveland, have <br />resolved to adopt the MacBride Principles over the course of nearly 25 years and many have also <br />ordained to require adherence to such equal employment opportunity ]aws by public contractors <br />and as a condition of public investment; and <br />WHEREAS, in November, 2006, William C. Thompsoil, Hr., thc Comptroller of the City <br />of New York provided an extensive status report on the effect of support for The MacBride <br />Principles by various public and private cutities in the United States, thc resulting progress in <br />the resolution of labor strife and cessation of violence in Northern Ircland, and the need for <br />continued implementation and enforcement of the MacBride pcinciples, including the <br />requirement for adherence by private co»tractors and investors as a co»clition of public funding; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, the City of North Olmsted supports the continued adoption of and <br />adherence to The MacBride Principles by both public and private entitics in the United States <br />and around the world as a nzeans to i•equire respect for civil and human rights, ineluding laws <br />that prohibit unlawful discrimiuatioii and protect the rights of all peolflc to equal employment <br />opportunities in Northern Ireland; and <br />WHEREAS, the Ciry of Nortli Olnisted supports, endorses and would recommend the <br />adoption of The MacBride Principles by the State of Ohio, joining ???:til other States and -he <br />United States, as a means to continue peace and progress in Northern Ireland, requiring respect <br />for eivil and human rights, including laws that prohibit unlawful discriniination and protect the <br />rights of all people to equal employmeilt opportunities in Northern Ireland; and <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />NORTH OLMSTED, CDUNTY OF CU3 fl HOGA, AND STfI TL OF 0: 1`IO: <br />SECTION 1: That the Council of the City of North Olmsted does hereby adopt and <br />support The MacBride Principles ancl thercfore ucges thc State of Oh'.o to join with 17 other <br />States across the nation in recognition tllereof ana to pass laws requiring ,ldherence to said equal <br />employment opportunity laws by coi»panies wllicli havc and benefit fconn business interests with <br />the State of Ohio. <br />SECTION 2: That the Clerl< of Council be and she is herebv clirected to forwarded an <br />attested copy of this Resolution to thc offices of State Representati\,c '?nnifer Brady and State <br />Senator Robert Spada, urging them to introducc legislation wherein ti?v State of Ohio would <br />adopt and support The MacBride Principles (reintroduce House Bill No. 21 from 126`h General <br />Assembly, 2005) and theraby require adhci-ence to said eyual emplo%'mcnt opportunity laws by <br />companies which have and benefit from busincss interests with the St.t:c of Ohio, and to also <br />provide a copy hereof to Oliio Governor "I'cd Strickland. <br />I <br />
