CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2008 - 51 <br />By: Mayor O'Grady <br />A RESOL UTION DECLARING WORLD A UTISM A WARENESS DA Y IN <br />NORTH OLMSTED AS APRIL 2, 2008, AND SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS <br />OF AUTISM SPEAKS, A 501(c)(3) ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO <br />INCREASING A WARENESS OF A UTISM SPECTR UM DISORDERS, <br />FUNDING RESEARCH, AND ADVOCATING FOR THE NEEDS OF <br />AFFECTED FAMILIES, AND DECI ARING AN EMERGENCY <br />WHEREAS, autism affects all persons regardless of race, religion, socio-economic status <br />or geography; and <br />WHEREAS, the incidence of autism in the United States is 1 in 150 and 1 in 94 boys, <br />with rates appearing to have increased similarly around the globe; and <br />WHEREAS, a child is diagnosed with alitism every 20 minutes; and <br />WHEREAS, based on data collected from North America, Western Europe and Japar, it <br />is conservatively estimated that 35 million people worldwide have autism; and <br />WHEREAS, on December 18, 2007 the United Nations General Assembly adopted <br />Resolution 62/139 World Autism Awareness Day by unanimous consent, encouraging LTN <br />Member States to take measures to r,iise a\vai-eness about autism throughout society and to <br />promote early diagnosis and earlybehav ioral intervcntion; and <br />WHEREAS, the Resolution desigiiatcs \11orld Au.tism Awareness Day as a United <br />Nations Day to be observed every year startinL, in 2008 to raise global awareness of autism; and <br />WHEREAS, the aims for World Autisrii Awaceness Day are to inform the general public <br />about the global health crisis of autism, stress the importance of early diagnosis and early <br />intervention, and to celebrate the uniqtie talents ancl qualities of individuals with autism; and <br />WHEREAS, autism is a lifelonL? condition in which the bulk of cost calls in adulth-od, <br />creating an enormous economic impact; and <br />WHEREAS, the consequent development c?l?ilenges of autism threaten to undermine the <br />achievement of the United Nation's Milleiinium Development Goals and other internationally <br />agreed development goals; and <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE 17' RF_SOl_ VF_ D R l' THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />NORTH OLMSTED, COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA, : IND STATE OF OHIO:
