CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2000-116 <br />BY: COUNCILPERSON KASLER <br />A RESOL UTION EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR THE PASSAGE OF HOIISE BILL <br />761, WHICH WOULD IMPOSE AN ADDITIONAL MANDATORY SEVEN (7) <br />YEAR TERM OF IMPRISONMENT UPON INDIVIDUALS CONVICTED OF <br />CERTAIN FELONY OFFENSES INVOLVING THE DISCHARGE OF FIREARMS <br />AT PEACE OFFICERS, AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. <br />WHEREAS, the Ohio General Assembly has before it for consideration HB 761, which <br />would require that any individual, who is convicted of a felony which includes as an essential <br />element that physical harm or death was caused, or attempted to be caused, to another, would be <br />subjected to an additional mandatory seven (7) year term of imprisonment if the indictment for the <br />said felony included a specification that the offender committed the felony by discharging a <br />firearm at a police officer; and <br />WHEREAS, said bill has been sponsored by State Rep. DePiero in memory of Cleveland <br />police officer Wayne Leon who was killed in the line of duty in Cleveland, Ohio, on June 25, <br />2000; and <br />WHEREAS, this Council supports such reasonable and rational efforts by the General <br />Assembly to impose additional and more severe punishment upon those individuals in our society <br />who decide to fire guns at police officers whose job it is to maintain the peace in our society; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />NORTH OLMSTED, COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA AND STATE OF OHIO: <br />SECTION 1: That the Council of the City of North Olmsted hereby resolves to endorse, <br />support and work for the passage of HB 761, beginning by mailing a copy of this Resolution of <br />Support to Governor Taft, to State Senator Spada, and to State Rep. Conway Kilbane. <br />SECTION 2: That the Clerk of this Council is hereby directed to forward a copy of this <br />Resolution, immediately upon its passage and approval, to the aforementioned individuals.
