In conjunction with the addition of a 17-story
hotel, convention center, and tribal museum, the Mashantucket Pequot tribe has contracted with
M&E to expand the treatment facility from 1.0 to 3.6 mgd within a tight time frame and under
severe space constraints.
The plant now uses covered sequencing
batch reactors for odor control and year- ?,?E tee'daved the '199,9 Engineerang, Exc0enee
round nitrification and denitrification. ????? #rc?m ?e ??ri?rlaara ?Car?s?i3irac?' Treated effluent is then discharged to rapid
infiltration beds. The plant was designed to meet BODS goals of Smg/I, TSS goals of 5 mg/1, TN
goals of 8 to 10 mg/l, and TP goals of 1 mgil. M&E staff inembers examined numerous options
for water reuse, odor control, sludge dewatering, and future expansion scenarios.
The facility's proximity to the casino complex requires that the plant blend in with its
f surroundings and that the resort's large number of visitors be shielded from odors, noise, and
sludge truck traffic. With this in mind, Metcalf & Eddy redesigned the liquid sludge thickening
and disposal processes and added an expanded waste-activated sludge storage tank and decanters
to prethicken the waste sludge, which then is dewatered in a centrifuge. Because of tight space
constraints, dewatered sludge is distributed to roll-up dumpsters using a double-belt conveyor
that moves the dewatered sludge vertically. These improvements have resulted in a 75%
decrease in sludge truck traffic.
Additional M&E services will include start-up, O&M support, and staff training.
