? <br />CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2000-69 <br />By: The Mayor and Entire Council <br />A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE CITY OF CLEVELAND'S PLANS TO <br />INCREASE WATER RATES BY 17 1/2% OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS <br />FROM 2001 THROUGH 2005 AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY AS <br />AMENDED. <br />WHEREAS, Cleveland Mayor Michael R. White's administration proposes raising <br />water rates three and a half percent each year from 2001 through 2005, a five year, 17 1/2% <br />hike; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Cleveland's Water Department serves all of Cuyahoga <br />County except the City of Berea; and the city's system also reaches into Lorain, Geauga and <br />Summit counties, providing water for approximately 1.5 million people in the City of <br />Cleveland and 69 suburbs; and <br />WHEREAS, current suburban rates are higher than those paid by City of Cleveland <br />residents; and <br />WHEREAS, the North Olmsted City Council is concerned with the lack of attention <br />paid to the necessary replacement of severely deteriorating water lines throughout the City of <br />North Olmsted; and <br />WHEREAS, the North Olmsted City Council feels the increase would impose a <br />serious and unfair financial hardship for our constituents; and <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />NORTH OLMSTED, COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA, STATE OF OHIO: <br />SECTION l: The North Olmsted City Council hereby opposes the City of <br />Cleveland's proposed water rate increase for the next five years, 2001 through 2005, as it will <br />be unduly burdensome to North Olmsted residents. <br />SECTION 2: The Clerk of Council is hereby directed to forward certified copies of <br />this Resolution to Mayor Michael R. White, 601 Lakeside Avenue, N.E., room 202, <br />Cleveland, OH 44114; Cleveland Councilman Michael O'Malley, 601 Lakeside Avenue, <br />N.E., room 220, Cleveland, OH 44114; Cleveland Water Commissioner Julius Ciaccia, 1201 <br />Lakeside Avenue, 2°d Floor, Cleveland, OH 44114; and surrounding communities.
