u) "Massing" means the interaction of height, width, depth, and proportion, thus
<br />forming a visual image of size.
<br />v) "Materials" means brick, wood, stone, metal, glass, etc., which can represent
<br />themselves or can be formed to represent another material; e.g., vinyl siding is typically formed to
<br />reference wood clapboard.
<br />w) "Member" means a person who has been appointed to serve as a member of the
<br />Landmarks Commission.
<br />x) "Orientation" means the juxtaposition of components and elements to each other
<br />as well as the juxtaposition of the image as a whole to its environment.
<br />y) "Ornamentation" means an applied and incorporated decoration used to embellish
<br />the building. Examples of ornamentation are cornices, window hoods, columns, quoins, etc.
<br />z) "Owner" means a person or persons who are the legal owners of record of a
<br />building site, landmark, builaing or other structure.
<br />aa) "Pattern/rhythm" means the repetition of forms, materials, texture, elements, etc.
<br />in the image.
<br />bb) "Preservation" means the process of sustaining, restoring or reconstructing the
<br />form and extent of a landmark, building or other structure essentially as it now exists or as it
<br />existed in the past. While significant rebuilding is not contemplated, owners of buildings or other
<br />structures in landmark districts should be encouraged to restore or reconstruct landmarks which
<br />have been lost to the City and its residents. As a minimum, further deterioration should be
<br />controlled and provisions for the continued structural stability of landmarks is a primary goal.
<br />cc) "Proportion" means the relationship in size, dimension, scale, etc. of the various
<br />elements of the building to themselves and the image as a whole.
<br />dd) "Rationale" means the process of logical reasoning in preparing correct procedures
<br />in establishing criteria for preparation and presentation of documented evidence for properties
<br />designated as landmarks.
<br />ee) "Reconstruction" means the process of rebuilding a replica of a certain building or
<br />facility no longer in existence.
<br />if) "Recycling" means the process of adoptive reuse or new functions for older
<br />structures that would otherwise be demolished.
<br />gg) "Rehabilitation" means the process of returning a property to a state of utility
<br />through repairs or alterations and keeping those portions of the property which have historicat
<br />significance, properly preserved and restored.
<br />hh) "Restoration" means the process of accurately recovering the form and details of a
<br />property as it appeared at a particular period of time by removing later work and replacing
<br />missing original structures or appurtenances.
<br />ii) "Scale" means the perception of massing in relationship to various indicators such
<br />as people, adjoining buildings, the site environment as a whole. Scale is typically observed on
<br />many visual levels for the same building or structure.
<br />jj) "Site Scaping" means the components that combine to enhance the building site
<br />such as benches, light fixtures, fences, planters, landscaping, etc.
<br />kk) "Structure" means anything constructed or erected, the use of which requires
<br />permanent location on the ground.
<br />11) "Style" means the combination of elements and components in commonly
<br />recognized and accepted patterns. Examples of styles are Georgian, Federal, Crreek Revival, Neo-
<br />Classic, Italian Renaissance, Second Empire, Art Deco, International, Post Modern, etc.
