CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION NO. 99-14 <br />BY: COUNCIL MEMBERS LIMPERT AND O'GRADY <br />A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE POSITION OF SENATOR MIKE <br />DEWINE URGING PRESIDENT CLINTON TO INTERCEDE REGARDING <br />THE IMPORT OF STEEL FROM FOREIGN COUNTRIES AND DECLARING <br />AN EMERGENCY. <br />WHEREAS, Ohio Senator Mike DeWine has urged President Clinton to intercede on behalf of <br />American steelworkers with regard to the import of steel from foreign countries of Russia and Japan; and <br />WHEREAS, the Russian import of steel into the United States is up 150% and the Japanese <br />import of steel into the United States is up 200% with portions of the steel imports being dumped at the <br />Great Lakes piers; and <br />WHEREAS, foreign countries selling steel at a cheaper rate than steel produced in the United <br />States help their own economies improve while putting American steelworkers out of work; and <br />WHEREAS, the existing laws regarding the import of steel are not being enforced and the Mayor <br />and this Council desire to support the position of Senator Mike DeWine and also to urge President <br />Clinton to enforce the existing laws restricting the import of steel affecting the American economy. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />NORTH OLMSTED, COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA AND STATE OF OHIO: <br />SECTION l: Mayor Norman Musial and the Council members of the City of North Olmsted <br />hereby sta.te their strong support of the positions of Senator Mike DeWine and join him in urging <br />President Clinton to intercede and enforce existing laws regarding the import of steel from foreign <br />countries into the United States to alleviate the loss of American jobs. <br />Section 2: The Clerk of Council be and she is hereby authorized and directed to forward a copy <br />of this Resolution to Senaxor Mike DeWine and to President Bill Clinton as an indication of the strong <br />feelings of the officials of the City of North Olmsted with respect to saving the jobs of many American <br />steelworkers. <br />Section 3: This Resolution is hereby declared to be an emergency measure immediately <br />necessary for the preservation of the public peace, health and welfare and for the further reason that it is <br />necessary to communicate to the President the feelings of the Council and Administration regarding the <br />serious effects of importing steel from foreign countries on our nation's economy. <br />Section 4: This Resolution shall take effect and be in force immediately upon its passage and <br />approval by. 1,he Mayor. <br />t ! <br />Passed:. <br />Attes . ? g <br />L- <br />Barbara L.
