1% <br />CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUT?ON NO. 95-87 <br />By: The Mavor and Entire Citv Council <br />A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE WORLDWIDE COMMEMORATION OF <br />THE DAY OF THE AFRICAN CHILD ON JUNE 16, 1995, AND DECLARING AN <br />EMERGENCY. <br />WHEREAS, the U. S. Committee for UNICEF, the United Nations <br />Children's Fund will join UN/CEF and the Organization for African Unity in <br />commemorating the frfth annua/ Day of the African Child on June 16; and <br />WHEREAS, this year's campaign will exp/ore the theme of children in <br />armed conflict; and <br />WHEREAS, in the past decade wor/dwide, approximate/y two million <br />children have been killed in armed conflicts, about 92 million have been lefl <br />homeless and more than one miJlion have been orphaned; and <br />WHEREAS, this commemoration gives us the opportunity to draw <br />attention to the extraordinary cha/lenges facing African children; and <br />WHEREAS, a study of Rwanda found that 75 % of the children had seen <br />firsthand someone being killed, more than 50% had seen a family member killed <br />and most had witnessed mass killings in schoo/s, churches and other areas; and <br />WHEREAS, it is fhe goal of the U. S. Commifitee for UNICEF to work <br />vigorously in its education, advocacy and fundraising initiatives to ensure the <br />su?vival, protection and deve/opment of Africa's children and for children <br />worldwide; and <br />WHEREAS, individuals, groups and businesses are encouraged to <br />support the Day of the African Child by confributing to the U.S. CommiHee for <br />UNICEF's Day of the African Child Fund or to other relief effo?ts in Rwanda, <br />Somalia, Nigeria, Liberia and Ango/a; and <br />WHEREAS, the Audrey Hepburn Memorial Fund, established in honor of <br />the /ate actress and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, promotes education <br />initiatives for children in those areas. <br />WHEREAS, residents interested in learning more about this effort can cali <br />1-800-FOR-KIDS, or contact the U.
