CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION N0. 81-143 <br />BY: Mayor Swietyniowski <br />A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE BURIAL OF <br />RADIOACTIVE WASTES IN OHIO AND <br />PARTICULARLY IN THE CLEVELAND SALT <br />MINE OR ANY AREA ALONG THE GREAT <br />LAKES WATERFRONTS. <br />WHEREAS, the Federal Government, through the U.S. Department of <br />Energy, has initiated a National Waste Terminal Storage Program to <br />identify and locate national sites for the storage of nuclear wastes, <br />and <br />WHEREAS, this Council is strongly opposed to the storage of <br />nuclear wastes in any part of Northeast Ohio or the Ohio Salina Salt <br />Basin, and <br />WHEREAS, radioactive waste is toxic and deadly to humans and the <br />environment; causes cancer; birth defects; genetic damage, and <br />irreversible harm to the biosphere and the transportation of waste <br />is vulnerable to accidents and terrorism, and <br />WHEREAS, The State of Ohio is a ciensely populated industrial and <br />agricultural state and the threat from radioactive waste to lives, <br />industry and agriculture remains for centuries, and <br />WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of Energy insists on continuing <br />studies of the Cleveland Salt Mine relative to issues surrounding burial <br />of radioactive wastes; the citizens of the City of North Olmsted do not <br />want this study continued and do not want the Greater Cleveland Area, <br />particularly the Cleveland Salt Mine or any area along the Great Lakes <br />Waterfronts, considered as a nuclear burial site. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NORTH <br />OLMSTED, COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA AND STATE OF OHIO: <br />SECTION 1: That this Council and the citizens of the City of North <br />Olmste?'[c urge the United States Department of Energy to cease all studies <br />leading to the burial of radioactive wastes in Ohio, the Cleveland Salt <br />Mine or any area along the Great Lakes Waterfronts. <br />SECTION 2: That the Clerk be and she is hereby directed to send <br />certified copies of this Resolution to President Ronald Reagan, the U.S. <br />Department of Energy, U.S. Senators John Glenn and Howard Metzenbaum, <br />U.S. Congressman Ronald Mottl, Governor James Rhodes, and the Ohio <br />Department of Energy. <br />SECTION 3: That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force <br />at the earliest period allowed by law. <br />PASSED: <br />ATTEST: <br />? . • ?. <br />??4 First reading: <br />Ro ert W.
